Armageddon is here - and here's some of the costumes

It's Labour Day weekend and of course if you're in Auckland, that means the Armageddon Expo 2012.

It runs from October 19 - 22nd at ASB showgrounds and is well worth a look if you're into anything slightly geeky...

Here's some pics from the event to give you a flavour of what's going on:

Behind the scenes of The Hobbit

Behind the scenes of The Hobbit

God bless The Hollywood Reporter.

They've just gone behind the scenes of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and there are a couple of wonderful images from Peter Jackson and the gang.

We're starting to get heaps of new Hobbit images currently - so here's hoping that there are still a stack more to come. We've had the first look at Frodo in The Hobbit, as well as a heap of Hobbit banners.

Take a look at one of the images from The Hollywood Reporter's behind the scenes Hobbit piece - and then visit their site for the full gallery - you won't regret it.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is due for world-wide release on December 13, with the second film, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, releasing on December 12 next year.
The last instalment of The Hobbit: There and Back Again is slated for July 17, 2014.

Internationally renowned cat movie hits NZ

Internationally renowned cat movie hits NZ

Yes, I really did just write that.

New Zealand's short film festival, Show Me Shorts is gearing up for its launch on November the 1st with the promise of premieres aplenty.

Films from Australia, Switzerland, Ireland, Israel, Spain, India, Iceland and the USA all make up the line up.

But there's one film which has already won international acclaim - and the hearts of animal lovers everywhere.

It's CatCam - The Movie, (which is premiering at the Show Me Shorts Film Festival), a fifteen minute short which has fired the imagination of every single moggie owner worldwide who are desperate to know what happens the minute their pet goes out the cat flap and into the wide world.

In it, a German-American engineer Jurgen Perthold decides that he wants to know a little more about where their initially stray cat, Mr Lee, headed off to every day on his travels.

It's true that curiosity killed the cat, but it also seems to have put a crimp in Jurgen's spare time as he devoted a large chunk of time to developing a camera to place around the cat's neck. Within a few days, the engineer's cracked it and soon the cat's out with a secret-eye recording what's going on.

Initially, the camera brought back only pictures which satiated Perthold's desire to see where the feline got to on its travels around their North Carolina home.

But what actually happened was that these pictures ended up becoming an internet sensation - picking up award nominations and actually scooping prizes, much to their owner's surprise. It also fuelled a massive business for Perthold, who ended up being bombarded with thousands of emails wanting to get a hold of the kitty camera for their own use.

Consequently, Perthold developed a video camera to capture the antics of Mr Lee - from drinking out of streams, watching birds to catching what happens when the traditionally loner animal met up with others of its own kind. The camera's now been sold worldwide and the internet's awash with people posting pics of what feline antics their own pets get up to daily.

The CatCam doco has already received an award at the South By South West Short Doc Jury prize, as well as scoring nominations at the prestigious Sarasota Film Festival, and the Tribeca Film Festival.

CatCam The Movie screens at the Show Me Shorts Film Festival which plays around New Zealand from November.

Alex Cross: Movie Review

Alex Cross: Movie Review

Cast: Tyler Perry, Matthew Fox, Edward Burns, Rachel Nichols, Jean Reno
Director: Rob Cohen

From the director of xXx and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor and from the books made famous by James Paterson, comes the latest incarnation of detective Alex Cross.

This time, Tyler Perry takes on the role of the detective, who's called to a homicide in a swanky part of town. As Cross investigates the case further with his team Tommy and Monica (played by Ed Burns and Rachel Nichols), it soon transpires that the assassin responsible, a sadistic killer known as The Butcher (played by a terrifyingly gaunt Matthew Fox) is going to make it personal.

When the Butcher kills Cross' newly pregnant wife, Cross vows to hunt down the killer - whatever the cost and by whatever means necessary.

Soon, the cat and mouse game begins with Cross on a vengeful hunt as the Butcher edges ever closer to completing his mission

Alex Cross is somewhat of a bizarre undertaking as a film.

It's very trashy, pulpy and quite lacking in any real tension as it spins out its cat'n'mouse game. So in some aspects, it's quite similar to any crime fiction novel. It begins with Cross being shot at in a drain pipe and sees him leaping from a crime scene (after hearing the victim thank him) to Cross playing a game of chess at the local prison with a convicted felon.

Sure, that tells you everything you need to know about Tyler Perry's earnest portrayal of Cross; he's a family man, a detective with a conscience and a simmering bad ass when he's crossed.

But what it doesn't tell you is how appalling some of the dialogue of this film is - and how it hampers it from reaching anything other than the trashy stakes of a churned out crime novel.

Perhaps, the best line of the lot is Cross' intoning "Don't over-think it - I'm just looking for a bad guy" - which really sums up the hammering home of every minor piece of exposition and narrative employed by director Rob Cohen. Why use a swirling camera to capture what skills Cross employs at a crime scene, when you can have his partner and long term friend Tommy urge him to look at the scene and employ his intuitive nature to tell them what they need to know - "Think like him Alex - get inside his mind".

There's no subtlety in this film at all - The Butcher is so mad at Cross for thwarting him that he pins pictures to the wall and rages against them while a moody track plays; one goon actually uses the line "Call Hans - tell him to have my assault rifle ready" with no hint of irony; the crimes against story-telling and dialogue are numerous enough to see Alex Cross arrested on sight.

This is also the film which Matthew "I was on Lost for years" Fox sheds a heck of a lot of body weight and hair to play a bad guy who's not quite as bad as you'd expect. Sinewy and sneery, it's an odd portrayal for Fox and one which doesn't quite hit the mark at all. Psycho he may look, but he's nothing more.

As for Perry, well, he does okay as Alex Cross - but he brings very little to the table other than formulaic for his Cross - and even when he goes "bad-ass", there's certainly not much done to push the boundaries of the acting.

Alex Cross is a by the numbers thriller which is anything but exciting and is, sadly, made risible thanks to ham-fisted direction and dialogue.
