Universal Pictures celebrates 100 years

Universal Pictures celebrates 100 years

2012 may nearly be over, but for one movie studio, it's been a major milestone of a year, with a fair few months of celebration yet to come.

Universal Pictures has celebrated 100 years of movies this year - and chances are you'll know at least one or two of their films and their iconic memories which have been created.

The Universal 100th Celebration site offers up a tantalising glimpse into the history of the company, from its founder Carl Laemmie first setting up the Independent Moving Picture Company back in 1906 to the merger of IMPC into the entity that would become Universal on April 30th 1912, the site hints at the effect Universal has had on the movie world.

The site's also about getting you to remember iconic moments from classic films - with the re-release of a beautiful ET Blu Ray hitting the shelves this month likely to start some of those memories flowing. I personally remember being blown away by the BMX bikes rising into the air in one of the film's magically iconic moments and equally being terrified by the billowing white tents when the government comes for ET at the end.

The collectors' series this year has shown there is a lot of love being put into the extras - for example, the ET set includes a collectable 44 page booklet, with a Drew Barrymore introduction as well as an insight into how the film was created.

There are so many films to think back on - Phantom of the Opera, All Quiet on the Western Front, Arabian Nights, The Deer Hunter. In fact, it's just easier if you watch the video below to set your memories tingling...

Friends with Kids: Blu Ray Review

Friends with Kids: Blu Ray Review

Rating: M
Released by Roadshow Home Entertainment

Gathering together much of the ensemble cast of Bridesmaids, Friends with Kids stars Parks and Rec's Adam Scott as advertising exec Jason and Julie (Jennifer Westfeldt who wrote and directed this).

These longterm friends live in Manhattan and have a group of friends, Alex and Leslie (Chris O'Dowd and Maya Rudolph) and sex-obsessed Missy and Ben (Jon Hamm and Kristen Wiig). When the two couples have kids, Julie and Jason feel sidelined by their friends and their brood.

So, one day, on the spur of the moment, they decide to have a child of their own too - but without the horrors of marriage (as they perceive them) to tie them down. But while their foray into parenthood goes well, their mutual decision to date other people causes friction between the pair....because there's true love lurking in there.

Friends with Kids is more drama, than dramedy.

Initially, though it starts off quite riotously funny before moving into hidden love territory with a story that's as old and as predictable as you could imagine. If you go into this expecting a Bridesmaids series of laughs as four of that cast are reunited, you'll be disappointed.

It's watchable enough fare as the smug Jason and blonde Julie negotiate their way through the inevitable complications but you may feel a little short changed as this piece, filled with occasional universal home truths, trundles on. Sadly Scott and Westfeldt have no real chemistry together, giving their true love reveal at the end a degree of implausibility. With moments of awkwardness and humour, and a final 20 minute stretch crammed with sentiment, Friends with Kids unfortunately never quite lives up to its initial promise.

Hick: Blu Ray Review

Hick: Blu Ray Review

Rating: R18
Released by Universal Home Entertainment

Kick Ass' Chloe Grace Moretz stars in this cinematic adaptation of Andrea Portes' novel.

When small town girl Luli turns 13, and is abandoned by both her white trash mother and father, she decides to run away to Vegas to try for a better life. However, she is picked up by questionable Eddie (Eddie Redmayne) and also meets cocaine-snorting drifter Glenda (Gossip Girl's Blake Lively).

However, when she discovers these two know each other, things go a little awry.

Hick benefits from a good opening act and a strong performance from Chloe Grace Moretz, who quotes movie lines, carries a gun and generally acts well above her years. It's a shame then, that once it heads to Vegas it all falls into a quite nasty tale, which isn't particularly watchable.

Disappointing in the extreme and sleazy, Hick isn't your average night in's watch and you may end up feeling a little sordid afterwards.

Extras - None; not even subtitles.

A Few Best Men: Blu Ray Review

A Few Best Men: Blu Ray Review

Released by Icon and Roadshow Home Entertainment
Rating: R16

Bridesmaids has set the bar high for R rated wedding based comedies.

And so the latest contender to the crown emerges from Australia and the UK in this joint venture.

Twilight's Xavier Samuel stars as David, whose holiday fling ends with him proposing marriage to Aussie girl, Mia. So when he heads back to the UK, David gathers his friends, Graham, Tom and Luke, tells them the news and the gang of four head down under for the society wedding.

But, as ever, things don't go according to plan - as Tom and Graham unwittingly unleash the wrath of a drug dealer thanks to a misunderstanding; and Mia's senator father finds his plans for the big day, disrupted&will David manage to get things back on track?

A Few Best Men manages a handful of good laughs scattered throughout, before pulling out every predictable gag in its limited repertoire as it weaves its way to its unsurprising end.

Jokes involving the sheep, drugs, sheep CPR, toilet humour, Hitler moustaches, gimp masks - they are all unveiled as the writers throw absolutely everything they have into the mix but it's not enough to be able to save this from a real mire of awfulness. Even Rebel Wilson can't lift it up.

And because it's so predictable and bad, it becomes a matter of enduring to the end of the film rather than enjoying it.
