Auckland man first in the world to get XBoxOne

Auckland man first in the world to get XBoxOne

An Auckland man is the first in the world to get his hands on the XBoxOne console.

Dan Livingstone of Auckland won the honour at the launch of the next generation console at Shed 10 in the city just moments ago.

Dan said he'd never come first in anything at all - and was overwhelmed at being the first person in the world to be given the new console after a series of draws.

Around a thousand people packed into the glitzy event at Auckland's Viaduct which saw Kim Dotcom among the hardcore gamers who were queueing to ensure they got their chance to be in line to get the new console.

At an event in Auckland, gamers and fans mingled waiting to get their hands on the console.

Here are some sights from the XBoxOne launch event. Including the first person in the world to officially own the new XBoxOne, Auckland man Dan Livingstone.

Delivery Man: Movie Review

Delivery Man: Movie Review

Cast: Vince Vaughn, Chris Pratt, Cobie Smulders
Director: Ken Scott

A remake of a 2011 French-Canadian film called Starbuck, Delivery Man is a somewhat revelation when it comes to its leading man.

That leading man is Vince Vaughn and in this more-or-less shot-for-shot remake of the original (under the helmship of the original director Scott). Vaughn is David Wozniak, a meat delivery man, whose heart is in the right place but who can't seem to find the right time to do the right thing.

He discovers his girlfriend Emma (How I Met Your Mother's Cobie Smulders) is pregnant with their child, but due to his flakiness and the fact he's not always there, he's potentially about to be booted out of her life. Coupled with the fact he owes $80,000 to some guys who will finish him if it's not paid up, and you can see how Wozniak isn't exactly coping with the pressures of life.

But things get worse for Wozniak when the fertility clinic where he prolifically donated in his youth comes to him, revealing that he fathered some 530 plus children. And a group of those are suing the clinic to discover his identity...

Suffering a crisis of identity himself, Wozniak decides to become the guardian angel in their lives rather than fully reveal who he is....

I already know what you're thinking about Delivery Man, because I was thinking it too when I saw its lead was Vince Vaughn. You're visualising a raucous, Wedding Crashers, brash boorish kind of film that makes jokes at every turn and sees Vaughn as lead prankster. And even worse, you'd be expecting an abomination of the rather impressive original Starbuck...

Well, you'd be wrong. This turn by Vince Vaughn is, for the most part, one of his best since Swingers thanks to an introspective dialled-down, slightly muted turn by the man. Wozniak is an underachiever, a brow beaten schlub whose life is lacking meaning and whose decisions are always the wrong ones. And Vaughn manages to channel all of that with a restrained, almost at times mournful, performance that has a heart and warmth that's endearing. When Wozniak tells his father he's scared he'll disappoint, there's pathos etched across Vaughn's face aplenty.

There are occasional moments when Vaughn teeters on bringing out the over-acting, but director Scott appears to reign him back in. The interactions between Wozniak and his lawyer and brow-beaten father Brett (a terribly dry Chris Pratt) produce the lion's share of the laughs as the dryly farcical moments build up.

Scott also deserves praise - the script is tight, dryly funny when it really needs to be and he's helmed a ship which doesn't feel like your typical Hollywood dramedy. It's faithful to the original - and I'm guessing Scott had a great hand in that.

All in all Delivery Man more than delivers - and it produces one of the biggest surprises of the year from Vaughn.

Battlefield 4: PS3 Review

Battlefield 4: PS3 Review

Platform: PS3
Released by EA

Strap on your guns, it's time to get your pulse-pounding adrenalin fix from the latest incarnation of Battlefield.

DICE has rolled out all the stops for the first person shooter and placed you back squarely in the action. You play Recker, who in the prologue of the game is given the job of escaping Baku in Azerbaijan. After shooting your way out of an underwater car and leaving a colleague to die, it's all on as the bullets start whistling past your ears and the fighting really ramps up a notch. It's the usual mix of shouting, explosions and shooting. Throw in some action movie style dialogue and you're fully on board with everything that's supposed to be happening.

The thing with Battlefield 4 is you'll choose how you want to play it - if you're into the single player mode, you'll find some frustrations with occasional AI issues and gaming, but it still delivers the hit you're looking for. However, stunningly good visuals, cut scenes and a real sense of being part of a battlefield with combat hurtling on around you, do wonders for setting the game apart from a lot of similar fare. Weapons handling is relatively easy (a bit of tutorial is needed here and there) but it's responsive and reactive in a way that you'd expect for the game - it handles as it should and while you do occasionally need to be careful with how you're shooting and aiming, all in all, it does what it says on the tin.

Online is where Battlefield 4 really comes to life though, while maps ever changing, battlefields ever moulding themselves to the world around them with moments of unexpected mayhem adding to the mix. Team work is encouraged and rewarded within the game and it certainly pays off to stay within a group, rather than going rogue and shooting whatever you want. Tactics and teamplay are the reason for Battlefield 4's success and certainly you'll spend more time on the multiplayer online side of things than the campaign story.

Overall, Battlefield 4 scores as an experience and a FPS that continues to deliver in a genre that's not had a game changer for a while. But it's best to bring your mates along for the thrill ride and to ensure that you get the most out of it.

New Zealand gets in the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary celebrations

New Zealand gets in the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary celebrations

It's a big weekend for fans of UK sci fi series, Doctor Who.

The show celebrates its 50th anniversary on Saturday November 23rd (Sunday November 24th in NZ).

And Prime and UKTV are ensuring that Whovians don't miss out on the global celebrations which are taking place.

Here are details of what UKTV are upto

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who, UKTV will be premiering a special one-off drama, An Adventure In Space And Time, on Saturday 23 November at 5.50pm.

The drama, written by Mark Gatiss and executive produced by Gatiss alongside Steven Moffat and Caroline Skinner, travels back in time to 1963 to see how the beloved Doctor Who was first brought to the screen. Actor William Hartnell felt trapped by a succession of hard-man roles. Wannabe producer Verity Lambert was frustrated by the TV industry’s glass ceiling. Both of them were to find unlikely hope and unexpected challenges in the form of a Saturday tea-time drama, time travel and monsters! Working with a team of brilliant people, they went on to create the longest-running, science-fiction series ever.

A television legend began when the very first episode of Doctor Who was broadcast in the UK on November 23rd 1963, and 50 years later An Adventure In Space And Time brings to life the story of the show’s creation. Starring David Bradley (William Hartnell) as the very first Doctor, Jessica Raine (Verity Lambert), Sacha Dhawan (Waris Hussein), Lesley Manville (Heather Hartnell) and Brian Cox (Sydney Newman).

With just days to go until the Day Of The Doctor screens as part of the 50th Doctor Who celebrations, there's a real treat just been unleashed.

The Night Of The Doctor mini episode's been put out by the BBC to get the celebrations underway.

To say more would spoil it, but enjoy it below.

It's coming soon - and it's almost time to celebrate the Day of The Doctor.

BBC sci-fi series Doctor Who hits its 50th anniversary this very month on November 23rd and there are global celebrations planned.

But it's also a massive month - one of the biggest ever - for Doctor Who releases on the small screen.

BBC and Roadshow Home Entertainment have got a huge slate of Doctor Who releases planned for the celebrations - and it's great to see the show is being taken seriously over here.

First up though, there are three volumes of Doctor Who: Revisited out on November 6th:

A special 50th anniversary DVD series
The first volume in this restrospective series showcases Doctor Who's first four doctors - William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton, Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker, spanning from 1963-1981.

The Doctors Revisited includes a half hour profile and a classic story for each Doctor introduced by Steven Moffat (the current Lead Writer & Executive Producer). Each classic story is available to view as a widescreen, feature-length version or in its episodic, original format.

Featuring The Aztecs (William Hartnell), The Tomb of the Cybermen (Patrick Troughton) Spearhead from
Space (Jon Pertwee) and Pyramid of Mars Tom Baker.
RELEASED: 6 NOVEMBER * RRP: $39.99 * DISCS: 4 *

DOCTOR WHO REVISITED VOLUME 2
The years 1981-1996 saw four new actors portray the Doctor, Peter Davison, Colin Baker, Sylvester
McCoy and Paul McGann, the focus of the second volume in The Doctors Revisited. Featuring 30 minute
restrospectives per Doctor, a Steven Moffat introduction.. Each classic story is available to view as a
widescreen, feature-length version or in its episodic, original format.

Featuring the stories: Earthshock (Peter Davison), Vengeance on Varos (Colin Baker), Remembrance of the Daleks (Sylvester McCoy), and Doctor Who: The Movie (Paul McGann).

Then 2 weeks later, in the year that Doctor Who celebrates its 50th anniversary, the very first regeneration story gets a release too - The Tenth Planet.

DOCTOR WHO: THE TENTH PLANET
• Contains a newly animated fourth episode (the original is currently missing from the BBC Archives)
• The very first regeneration story

The TARDIS lands at the South Pole in 1986. The arrival coincides with the appearance of Earth’s forgotten twin planet Mondas along with visitors from that world – the emotionless Cybermen. It’s up
to the Doctor (William Hartnell) and his friends to stop the creatures before they convert Earth’s population into similar cyber creations – but the encounter will have a devastating effect on the Doctor...

Special Features: • Commentary • Frozen Out Making Of • Episode 4 Reconstruction • William Hartnell

Peter Purves, Frazer Hines and Mark Strickson reminisce about their time as companions • Companion Piece • Blue Peter Tenth anniversary retrospective on Doctor Who’s history • Radio Times Listings • English Subtitles • Photo

Perhaps the biggest release this month though, comes from the recent haul of 11 recovered previously missing episodes - and is a global day and date release - The Enemy of The World.

The Enemy of the World, is the fourth six-part tale of the original fifth series which first broadcast in the
UK December 1967. Alongside Patrick Troughton, who plays both the Time Lord, and his antagonist
(Ramon Salamander) are his companions Frazer Hines (Jamie) and Deborah Watling (Victoria). Episodes 1,  2, 4, 5 and 6 had been missing from the BBC archives, until now. All episodes have been re-mastered.

27 Doctor Who stories still remain missing or have incomplete episodes, after a number were lost as a
result of BBC Archive space-saving measures.
