Stories We Tell: DVD Review

Stories We Tell: DVD Review

Rating: M
Released by Madman Home Entertainment

The tangled family life of one of Canada's most respected young actors comes under the spotlight in this documentary, which in some ways, defies description and expectation.

Turning the camera on herself, Polley investigates the life of her family - her mother specifically - and how stories change when told by different people and from different perspectives.

Employing the adroitness of someone who would appear to have been doing this for a while, Polley manages to coax the best out of her subjects while sticking to an idea of what exactly she wants from this film. Initially, there's a swirl of confusion as you're overwhelmed by apparent archive footage of her mother at key moments from before Sarah was around.

However, it's here that Polley starts to mess with expectations of the traditional doco and blur the lines between fact and reality - as told by storytellers. Narrating the piece is her father, Michael, an actor who's dry sense of humour is evident throughout - and Polley manages to manipulate this at times by having her father re-read some lines of dialogue as it's recorded, subtly using those moments to emphasise the point she is trying to make.

In fact, her subjects at times seem a little befuddled by what's going on, with one asking "I hope you'll explain what you're trying to do" as the investigation into her past digs deeper. While I'd love to discuss the finer points of what transpires, aside from those being spoilers for those who know not of Polley's complicated life, part of the joy of this doco is watching it play out, as small emotional bombs explode amid the Canadian trademark humour.

The journey is a smartly executed one, with Polley's recreations of her mother's younger years and her examinations getting beneath your skin as she subverts the traditional trajectory of a documentary, mashing the fourth wall and her subjects together and ending up with something that's quite breathlessly different. Though there is a slight sense of feeling robbed when the reveal comes that the Super 8 footage that proffers an insight into a life aren't quite what they're cracked up to be.

The revelations within are more pertinent to her family, than an universal truth to be applied to us all, but the way Sarah looks at how stories are informed within a generation of an acting family is a clever insight into life behind the screen, even if differing sides of the story aren't actually brought to the table.

Stories We Tell remains a fascinating experiment, and a genre defying piece for the documentary field.

God's Pocket: DVD Review

God's Pocket: DVD Review

Rating: R16
Released by Madman Home Ent

Directed by Mad Men star John Slattery and taken from a book by Pete Dexter, God's Pocket also has the auspicious mantle of being one of Philip Seymour Hoffman's last films.

When Mickey (Hoffman)'s son is killed in a construction "accident", he finds his life turned into turmoil as he discovers those living in God's Pocket didn't actually care for his son. This causes tensions with his wife (Mad Men's Christina Hendricks) and forces him down a road he doesn't want to travel. Things only get worse when a reporter (the ever impressive Richard Jenkin) starts sniffing around.

Dour and melancholy, this is pitched as a black comedy, but it takes a while to get there. Hoffman's impressive as ever and his bond with John Turturro's equally as good, but the downbeat nature of the film will put many off. Excellently directed by Slattery, God's Pocket is worth it for Hoffman alone, but doesn't quite pack the punch you'd have expected.

Tiger Eyes: DVD Review

Tiger Eyes: DVD Review

Rating: M
Released by Madman Home Ent

Based on the book by Judy Bloom, Tiger Eyes is the story of Davey (Gossip Girl's Willa Holland), who's forced to relocate to New Mexico and is now a stranger in the town she moves to.

Finding her own world in a turmoil after the move, Davey discovers even more tension in the extended family situation she's in - and only discovers comfort in the arms of native American climber, Wolf.

Bordering on the brink of the usual teen cliches and melodramas, Tiger Eyes actually works through a sensitively portrayed situation, a good solid turn from Holland and a vulnerability of life that's put on the screen. Worth sticking with, despite your early fears coming into play, Tiger Eyes remains a surprise for the genre and a film that fell through the cracks.

Transcendence: Blu Ray Review

Transcendence: Blu Ray Review

Released by Roadshow Home Ent

There are some big beefy sci-fi and existential questions under scrutiny in Transcendence.

Johnny Depp stars as Dr Will Caster, an artificial intelligence researcher who's part of a team that wants to create a sentient artificial machine. But his desire to do so isn't universally shared, with a splinter terrorist group (called RIFT) violently opposed to doing so.

When Caster's shot at an event as part of a simultaneous terror attack, it transpires the bullet's laced with polonium and he begins to succumb to radiation poisoning. However, this merely pushes Caster and his wife, Evelyn (Hall) ahead with their project to upload his consciousness to a computer.

Aided by long time friend, Max (Bettany), the project falters, but suddenly, Caster's consciousness takes hold, and grows, putting them all on a moral and physical collision course with the RIFT separatists.

Transcendence is a case of great ideas, great cast but terrible execution.

Pfister's eye as a cinematographer is clearly evident throughout, with some truly gorgeous shots on display, but it appears his aptitude as a director is somewhat lacking as the film lapses into cliched horror movie territory, having squandered an intellectually impressive premise.

Depp is comatose as Caster, before he actually becomes comatose as a version of 80s icon Max Headroom on a screen - he's no HAL that's for sure; Hall goes from desperate wife unable to let go to horrified at what she's created and Paul Bettany's Max is the worst offender - initially, fully on board with Caster's plan, but kidnapped by RIFT and appears to turn against him without any hint of reason other than being locked in a cage like a monkey by a Julian Assange blonde haired lead terrorist, played with dead behind the eyes by Kate Mara.

Lapses in logic and story-telling blight Transcendence, turning it from a great sci-fi premise to a schlocky B- movie fest that takes in cliches aplenty. Visually, it's mightily impressive and on an intellectual, it has pretensions above its director's grasp. For a techno-thriller, it veers more into plodding than riveting and dulls any initial interest with a lack of cohesion.

Ultimately, Transcendence is a wasted opportunity all round as it teeters into cliched sci-fi territory and revels in the hokum of science and wastes its cast instead of concentrating on solid story-telling.
