Churchill: Film Review

Churchill: Film Review

Cast: Brian Cox, Richard Durden, James Purefoy, Julian Wadham, Ella Purnell, Miranda Richardson
Director: Jonathan Teplitzky

The director of The Railway Man heads to Winston Churchill's quest for redemption in a character portrait about the man himself.
Churchill: Film Review

Set a few days before the D Day landings of June 1944, Cox's Churchill is undergoing a crisis - troubled by visions of the seas running red while he saunters at the beach, he fears the command to send troops in to remove the Nazis in Europe will lead to wholesale slaughter.

Summoned before King George (a wonderfully subtle turn from James Purefoy), Montgomery and Eisenhower (former Mad Men star John Slattery), Churchill finds his protestations to pull back and wait for everything to be right with Operation Overlord are largely ignored.

With the clock ticking closer to the window of launch, Churchill himself struggles to reconcile both his own past and the burdens of being a leader during the most difficult of times.

Against a backdrop of the 1736th day of World War II and with the horrors and guilt of Gallipoli central to Churchill's mental state, a hunched, portly and wilfully defiant Cox delivers a performance which teeters between poignant and bluster. Squat, angry and channeling the "Nar-zees" intonations of Churchill with ease, Cox disappears into the role with no trouble whatsoever.
Churchill: Film Review

And with his director wanting to shoot plenty of profile shots and moody slow-mo moments of a man puffing on a cigar and exhaling slowly, the portrait is evocatively realised to say the least.

Granted, there are some artistic licences taken with Churchill's last-minute protestations to the proposed landings, but Cox does nothing less than sell the moral dilemma of being a leader in war-time. While there's easily an argument to say very occasionally that Teplitzky over-eggs the dramatic pudding (something he was woefully guilty of during Colin Firth's turn The Railway Man) by relying heavily on the imagery to create the mood, the human edges are what really set this higher than the usual fare.

A wonderfully understated exchange between Purefoy's King George and Churchill is emotionally powerful, and simultaneously draped in tenderness, as the two discuss how Winston's desire to lead from the front is nothing short of foolhardy recklessness. In just 5 minutes on screen, these two actors lift this extraordinary sequence into the echelons of the compelling.

Equally, Richardson's long-troubled wife Clem, while under-used throughout other than to chide and scold the blustering pomposity of her angry husband, has a few scenes where the cost to the humanity and relationship of the central pair is smartly and deftly examined. It's here that Churchill manages to soar, as it rises above its time-ticking melodramatic edges and continual scenes of Churchill shouting out his guilty petulance while trying to navigate mentally quieter waters to appease his conscience.

Perhaps this is where Churchill could have been more successful than it already is.
Churchill: Film Review

With the theatre of war having been inexorably changed these days (to the simpler minded, it's merely the debate before the pressing of a button), Churchill is more successful when it examines the human cost of conflict. It reminds us of the mental consequences of the guilt of leadership, the burden of decision and the regret of past mistakes made.

Thanks to a lead actor who sinks into an almost chameleonic turn, Churchill thankfully becomes more than just a simple portrait of a man troubled by the sins of the past; it becomes a nuanced turn of historical interest, even if its questions of accuracy may dog it after the lights go up.

Rough Night: Film Review

Rough Night: Film Review

Cast: Scarlett Johansson, Jillian Bell, Kate McKinnon, Zoe Kravitz, Ilana Grazer, Paul W Downs
Director: Lucia Anello

Owing more than just a spiritual debt to Peter Berg's 1998's Very Bad Things and 2011's Bridesmaids, and coming off the back of the sisters-are-doing-it-for-themselves Wonder Woman the new Scar Jo ensemble comedy Rough Night starts strongly before faltering in the back half.
Rough Night: Film Review

Scarlett Johansson flexes her comedy chops as Jess, one time party girl and now political hopeful. On the eve of her wedding to Peter (Downs), she's pulled into a bachelorette party organised by college friend Alice (Bell, initially amusing and loud, latterly loud and screeching) in Miami.

Along with former college friends Frankie (Broad City's Ilana Glazer) and Blair (Zoe Kravitz) as well as Jess' new Aussie chum Pippa (McKinnon, the film's MVP) the quintet hit the clubs and party.

But things spiral out of control back at their rented beachside house when a stripper they've booked is accidentally killed...

There are some genuinely funny moments in the front-loaded first half of Rough Night, as director Lucia Anello (also known for Broad City) plies the film with some crafty, yet familiar, nods to female rivalries and friendships, as well as demonstrating that the girls can be just as bad as the boys.
Rough Night: Film Review

In particular, the pre-credits sequence set in 2006 when the gang was at college, sets Rough Night's stall out in the raunch and rude stakes in a way that will appeal either to the chicks night out at the flicks or to those liquored up and looking for some easy laughs.

A clever off-the-cuff gag involving a champagne bottle and an airport setting elicits a genuine belly laugh, while simultaneously demonstrating how on edge society's become.

However, once Alice's jealousy over Aussie Pippa is explored, and the stripper dispatched, the film settles for borderline average tropes and predictable laughs as it tries to untangle the mess it's created and push the envelope a bit further.

Easily the film's MVP, McKinnon's mix of dodgy Aussie accent along with unexpected one-liners keeps the unpredictability stakes high and provides the lion's share of the film's amusement as the screeching and hysteria sets in from the girls.

Bell's an easy contender for being irritating as the shouting starts, but manages to keep just on the right side of amusing and quirky.  Johansson plays it relatively straight, keeping the glue of the group together after some earlier quirks are established and displayed, but she's less the star of the film than you'd expect. Grazer and Kravitz feel a little sidelined as the film goes on, being more interested in exploring the three-way between Jillian Bell, Scarlett Johansson and Kate McKinnon as its main dynamic.
Rough Night: Film Review

Rough Night is not a savage skewering of stereotypes or a clever flipping of premises (even though the male bachelor party is more set against a backdrop of wine tasting), but it's a solid comedy that starts to run desperately out of steam as the film goes on.

It ends up in the inevitable sap and predictable sentimental gloop that you'd expect and that, to some degree, the target market will possibly want.

It's nowhere near as raunchy as it could get, and perhaps feels watered down as the squabbles come to the fore - it does occasionally work for the absurdism that permeates but disappoints that it doesn't demand more of all of its relatively likeable ensemble.

Less likely to give a cinematic hangover and more likely to struggle to be remembered after the lights go up, Rough Night, amongst its dysfunctional diatribes, makes a case that this kind of comedy film is still in rude health, even if trail-blazing isn't in its ambitions or execution.

Dominate the illegal arms trade in Southern San Andreas with Gunrunning, the latest update to Grand Theft Auto: Online. Your career as a prolific arms dealer begins with the acquisition of a Bunker. These underground fortresses serve as your base of operations for all Gunrunning activities, and each one is equipped with a computer terminal to tap into the Disruption Logistics network.
Start a Setup mission as a CEO, MC President or a VIP to source supplies, then assign your employees to manufacturing weapons, researching upgrades or split their time between the two. Your stock will grow over time (and more quickly with Staff upgrades) and when ready, reap the profits from your business by moving your merchandise to interested buyers across Los Santos and Blaine County. To ease the entry into this underground network for new would-be entrepreneurs, the required collateral to register as a VIP has been lowered to a $50,000 minimum Maze Bank balance.
This subterranean lair also comes with a suite of comforts and options. Once you’ve chosen your property from Maze Bank Foreclosures, you can pick from a range of styles. Add a shooting range (and compete against up to 3 other players), personal quarters, a gun locker and bespoke transportation options.

When you’re ready to escalate your operation, the Bunker can store a fully road-ready Mobile Operations Center. These massive rolling strongholds are available from Warstock Cache and Carry, and serve as another property in your portfolio - complete with options for three modular bays that can be assigned to tactical services like a Command Center, personal amenities like Living Quarters, or in-house customization workshops like the two-bay Weapon & Vehicle Workshops, or the modest Personal Vehicle Storage.
WEAPONIZED VEHICLES

A brand new class of motorized mayhem. Six armed military-grade death machines offer a range of creative solutions to destroying your opposition in any combat situation, each fully customizable with exclusive mods unlocked by your Research Staff and applied in the Vehicle Workshop module:
APC – A heavy duty armored personnel carrier equipped with a turret-mounted cannon that tears through metal like a hot knife through butter. Portholes offer vantages for small arms fire for up to four heavily armed mercenaries while the armored hull can conduct combat anywhere across both land and water. Available upgrades include SAM Battery and dropping Proximity Mines for pursuers to discover.
Dune FAV - Built for post-apocalyptic doomsday enthusiasts, this lightweight, armored sandrail features a dash-mounted machine gun, and is the kind of stylish transport that will slap the slack jaws off the Yellow Jack parking lot loiterers. Upgrade options include a 40mm Grenade Launcher, 7.62mm Minigun and Proximity Mines.
Half-Track – Who says you can’t have your 4 layer quad cannon shaped cake and eat it too? Wield the all-terrain capabilities of a tank, with all the advantages of a super-loaded truck: straightforward handling, a spacious cabin, and lots of fresh air for the lunatic on the .50 cal in the back. Swap that .50 cal for Quad 20mm Autocannons and add Proximity Mines from your MOC’s Vehicle Workshop.
Oppressor – It’s a motorcycle that flies. As if you need to know anything else, this rocket-powered hyperbike offers all your principles of flight in one package; thrust, extendable wings for lift and drag, and a front-mounted machine gun for good, clean fun. Poor aim? Upgrade the machine gun to Missiles.
Weaponized Tampa - The familiar muscle car gets a weaponized facelift now supporting a top-mounted Minigun and industrial-grade armor. Upgrades include Front Missile Launchers, Rear-Firing Mortar and Proximity Mines.
Anti-Aircraft Trailer - What you choose to reduce to smoking rubble with this thing is your business, and the sky is most definitely not the limit. Comes towed by a Vapid Sadler as standard, and artillery can be upgraded to Dual 20mm Autocannons or a Homing Missile Battery.
