The Mummy: Blu Ray Review

The Mummy: Blu Ray Review

Based on The Mummy, it has to be said that Universal's plan for a Dark Universe monsters series is off to a shaky start, and unlike its titular baddie, may struggle to rise from the grave.
The Mummy: Film Review

Tom Cruise stars as Nick Morton, who along with Jake Johnson's comedy sidekick Chris Vail, raid archaeological sites for their valuables. But it's ok because they have a motto, they're not "looters, they're liberators of precious antiquities."

However, when their Iraq mission unearths a major tomb, at the same time as a set of sarcophagi are unveiled in London, it soon becomes clear that they've found something sinister.

Especially when the mummified remains of wiped-from-Egyptian-existence-princess Ahmenet (Boutella in henna lettered face and body, complete with slinky moves) comes back to life....

A mix of tones, part origin for the Dark Universe and rehash of every Mummy story you've seen before, the 2017 version of The Mummy really doesn't quite know what it wants to be.

With elements of jump-scares horror from the Boris Karloff age, and a dose of silliness from the Brenda Fraser set of films, it plays fast and loose with what it wants to be. Which doesn't help it or engender a strong sense of its own identity.

Tom Cruise plays a variant of his usual confused WTF character as he finds himself trapped in a curse (much like the audience forced to sit through this sand-blasted resurrection of a film). It's this element of the film that's perhaps the best and ripe for exploration but it's thrown away by Kurtzman's workmanlike execution of a script that jumps from sequence to sequence without any real sense of purpose, logic or anything other than absurdity.

The Mummy: Film Review

Cruise's Morton is more Boom Raider, than Tomb Raider as the guns start blazing post the usual origins-of-the-mummy pre-credits scene, and his Romancing the Stone style attempts at banter with Annabelle Wallis' Jenny generally fall flat throughout, and don't give the film the emotional anchor it's clearly hoping for.

It helps little that every sequence in the film is served up with a large dose of exposition - and no more so than when po-faced suited and booted Russell Crowe shows up as the apparent head of shadowy organisation Prodigium (no sign of his Nick Fury eyepatch though). And don't even get me started on the Ray Winstone Cock-er-nee touches he brings to a certain character...

It's here that the Dark Universe strongly falters, as it ejects subtlety of set-up for future franchises in favour of blatant show and tell. It's an approach that speaks volumes to how desperate those in charge are to ensure the franchise works, no matter what the narrative cost.

The Mummy: Film Review

While a great majority of The Mummy lurches awkwardly like its remains are about to shatter, there are some moments that strongly work. Some of the action sequences, including that of the plane and an underwater chase are blessed with some good visuals (even though the latter looks like an cast-off from an episode of The Walking Dead at sea) and the mummy effects are quite well realised too.

More a frustration than a resounding success, the most horrifying thing about The Mummy is how weakly it executes the initiation of a franchise. Perhaps the scariest thing of all is that future films are incoming from this series - and with the bar not exactly set very high this early on, this Dark Universe series could be long best buried in the past before it's even begun.

Knack 2: PS4 Review

Knack 2: PS4 Review

Platform: PS4
Developed by Japan studio

Knack 2 does not care what you thought of Knack 1.
Knack 2: PS4 Review

Announced at PSX to a withering look, the return of this kiddy-friendly platformer doesn't really mind that many people hated the first one with a degree of unnecessary apathy.

The sequel sees Knack back investigating with Lucas and chums after goblins are sighted and robots start running amok.

That's really it for this story this time around - it's very simply about getting Knack to solve a series of problems with a bit of lateral thinking or a flurry of fists. To say it's not cerebral is no real insult to the game, but it's fairly enjoyable fare, with the addition of co-oping being the main reason to play this time. It's a nice in for the family and really does give the game an edge.
Knack 2: PS4 Review

There are 20 moves to be mastered, and while collecting relics and power ups help get these, there are really only a few go-to moves which will become part of your arsenal as you power through the chapters of the game. Cut scenes propel the story into where it needs to go, but barely with any gusto; it's kind of cutesy enough and Lucas really does look like the lead of How To Train Your Dragon.

But Knack himself is nicely rendered, and the milk bottle tingling effect of collecting the relics and swapping between big and little Knack never really loses its edge. There's a real nice sense of the animation when Knack drops all his bits and becomes bitesize Knack.

Along with the inclusion of QTEs through some of the scenes, the game never really develops beyond its previous MO, and while that's no bad thing, there's no sense, other than the co-op play, that Knack II has really upped the gaming ante.
Knack 2: PS4 Review

As a platformer, it's solid enough, with many elements feeling like Crash Bandicoot's early platforming escapades. It doesn't help that you are continually guided through areas and can't roam, and bizarrely some objects can be vaulted over, but not others - it's this kind of inconsistency which plagues Knack I and II that has probably irritated people.

But the mix of King Kong, Transformers, Rock-em-sock-em Robots, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Shrek, Hunchback of Notre Dame et al give Knack a hybrid feeling of its own that's hard to shake. It never really garners its own identity, which is not to damn it in many ways, merely to profess the fact it's had chances to branch out and doesn't seize them with gusto.

Ultimately, Knack II with its 14 or so hours of gameplay and cutesy edges is perfectly pleasant enough fare - the animation's top notch, and while the story-telling leaves a little to be desired, it certainly is an improvement on the first.

Whether history will look back on Knack fondly is yet to be determined, but for a family friendly platformer that's of all ages, it can't really put a foot wrong.

Ubisoft has announced that fans of the Assassin’s Creed universe will be able to take home two new Ubicollectibles figurines by purchasing them on the Ubisoft® Store starting October the 27th.
The figurine of Aya and the Hidden Blade will enrich the collection of the Bayek figurine and the Apple of Eden previously announced.

Each item have been crafted by hand for several months using 3D models from the game to offer premium quality. They are highly detailed pieces enhanced by a set of discernible textures and materials such as PVC or ABS.

§  Bayek - The figurine shows Bayek and his eagle Senu targeting their next prey. The Bayek figurine comes with a shield and weapons, including a bow and arrows, a sword and the Hidden Blade.
Bayek is a Berber-Egyptian. As a Medjay, he is one of the last in a long line of protectors of Ancient Egypt. Personal tragedy forced him to leave his home town and travel through Egypt. His journey will lead to the creation of the Brotherhood of Assassins.

§  The figurine of Aya shows her equipped with a dual wielding blade in a combat posture. Aya is a native of Alexandria and has both Egyptian and Greek ancestors. During her youth, she moved to Siwa where she met Bayek. While not a Medjay herself, Aya embraced the cause of Bayek when she married him. The figurine can be combined with Bayek’s to form a unique Assassin’s Creed Origins diorama.

§  The Apple of Eden - This official reproduction of the relic that will be seen in Assassin’s creed Origins is equipped with a led system so that the life size replica illuminates from within.
Among the most coveted Pieces of Eden, Apples are powerful artefacts designed by an ancient civilization to ensure humanity’s subservience, potentially allowing control over a subject’s thoughts, emotions and behavior.

§  The Hidden Blade – This secret weapon can be worn like Bayek or displayed as a collector piece. The hidden blade is a limited and numbered Edition with a Certificate of Authenticity: only 9,999 copies will be available.
During his long journey through Egypt, Bayek quickly uses this weapon as a faithful and lethal ally. Bayek’s Hidden blade is known to be the first one ever among the Assassin’s Brotherhood.

CODE VEIN unveils its battle system

Battle system of CODE VEIN is varied and offers a lot of possibilities for players

BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment Europe reveals today new screenshots about the upcoming action title CODE VEIN. The new assets highlight more details about the battle system, the character creation tool and 2 new characters.

CODE VEIN unveils its battle system

Battle system of CODE VEIN is varied and offers a lot of possibilities for players:
For example the Gift system allows them to use up to 8 gifts during battles to temporarily increase attacks or defense actions. Some other gifts are passive and they are gained with specific items or equipment.
With the Stamina Gauge, players will be able to manage all of their actions including attacks, evading, dashing and Drain. This is crucial to control their actions and they will need to be very attentive to the stamina gauge to survive inCODE VEIN. With a successful Drain action, the number of Ichor points will be increased as well as the maximum number of Ichor stock. A Special Drain, performed under special conditions, will not only increase the number of Ichor and the stock but also cause a massive damage to enemies. The Special Drain action will be possible after asuccessful parry with the same timing as the enemy’s attack, a successful attack from the back or a combo attack

Player character abilities are temporarily increased with the Focus System during battles when they are receiving or dodging an attack and when they are surrounding by multiple enemies. This system allows players to fight back in extreme situations and get power boost when they decide to intentionally place themselves in danger. They can for example negate an attack, increase their own attack and throw enemies in the air!
The Partner Action will also help players during fights. Companions will support them by attacking from the side, enhancing the skills and sharing Health Points when it’s needed.

The new assets of the day reveal also more details about new characters and the Character Creation where players will be able to create their own protagonist from the gender, body and hair styles to the voice of the character.
The young leader Louis really wants to help Revenants suffering from bloodlust. He ventures into the isolated land of VEIN looking for the source of Blood Beads to use it as a substitute for human blood. With his one-handed sword he is a swift attack expert and can elude with the armor type Ogre.
Io is a female Revenant who explores with the protagonists. She has no memories about her past but she knows very well VEIN. She will be extremely useful for the player character!

Immortal Unchained is coming

Immortal Unchained is coming

Immortal: Unchained, is a hardcore action RPG set in a dark, sci-fi universe - a unique take on a well-known sub-genre, blending a third-person action shooter with a hardcore RPG, coming to PlayStation®4 computer entertainment system, Xbox One, and PC via STEAM™ in 2018. This is the end; the game’s central character is unwillingly unchained and released by the warden. Given only the instruction that time is running out for the world and that your skills are now needed. You must set off with no memory of who you are or what you do and find any information you can from the game and the characters you meet. However, the truth is not always clear as characters will always put their own agenda first and discovering the truth is just as much a challenge as the gameplay and just as much of a reward
“Immortal: Unchained is a fresh new take on the emerging souls genre, “said Sarah Hoeksma, Marketing Director, Sold Out. “It is not for the faint-hearted and is a seriously challenging game. The story and range combat really sets us apart from other games out there and we’re really excited to finally be showing Toadman’s first IP to everyone at Gamescom.” From the writers of Battlefield 1 and The Witcher, the game features a diverse arsenal of unique weaponry for ranged and melee combat to aid you in exploring the world as you encounter brutal enemies and gigantic boss fights. Immortal’s ranged combat mechanics allow for tactical point-of-contact shooting to play strategically for your needs, when slowing down an enemy or disarming them may be more beneficial to gameplay than simply blasting them away. Immortal will be available both digitally and at retail on the PlayStation®4 computer entertainment system, Xbox One, and PC via STEAM™ in Q2 2018.

Everybody's Golf: PS4 Review

Everybody's Golf: PS4 Review

Platform: PS4
Developed by ClapHanz

This title is now 20 years old.

But it's still fiendishly addictive and simply enjoyable to pick up and play.
Everybody's Golf: PS4 Review

The last iteration of the game to hand was the PS Vita version that looked and played slickly in its smaller format. Equally, the PS4 version of the game is still utterly enjoyable to spend a few hours in and more than just a little fun if you fancy taking on the world for some global golfing.

Essentially a spit and polish of the title, the game's still the same - you have to hit balls into a tiny hole and do it better than anyone else. Colourful and Japanese influenced in its quirks and cutes, the game play is ferociously simple and easy to lose hours in.

The more you play with the clubs and improve your game, the better your handling of them is and the more powerful the set becomes and the better you become. Unlocking XP brings rewards and challengers - there's nothing more easy to execute than this game itself; it's not challenging to get in to, but it is challenging to put down and move on.
Everybody's Golf: PS4 Review

There's a heavy emphasis on multiplayer this time around, and while it's easy to dive in, the 20 year old title does graphically look a little silly at times as hordes of people scamper around the course and fade in and out as you play. It's the one bum note of the title which is still great fun.

The multiplayer elements work fine too and the idea of playing online with a raft of others is certainly a welcome one. Games are easy to join and simple to be involved with - simplicity is really Everybody's Golf's MO and reason for success.
Everybody's Golf: PS4 Review

While parts of the game show their age, Everybody's Golf is still tremendous pick up and play fun. It's not exactly a hole in one in parts, but it is very much ahead of the par for the course.

Doctor Who Series 10 Part 1: DVD Review

Doctor Who Series 10 Part 1: DVD Review

The Doctor's back for his final series in the Peter Capaldi form with this latest Doctor Who series.

Doctor Who Series 10 Part 1: DVD ReviewWith a brand new companion in tow, Bill (played excellently by Pearl Mackie) this latest split batch of episodes shows the show in its strengths and in its weaknesses.

As usual, it's elements of the story-telling which hold Who back, but then given such an equal footing of actors in the first half of the episodes, including the return of Matt Lucas as Nardole, there's a great reason to engage with the show.

Mackie impresses as Bill, a naturally curious companion, but no slouch in the emotional and intellectual fronts either. Mackie certainly owns the screen within moments and Steven Moffat's writing helps solidify it all very early on.

But it's Capaldi's work which also helps the latest run - a genuine vein of sadness persists in the Doctor's being grounded on Earth and charging with looking after a vault with a mysterious entity housed within.

While it's better to have the entire run released in one go, there's no denial that the solid work done by the cast all round makes Doctor Who Series 10 Part 1 worthy of your time.

Free Fire: Blu Ray Review

Free Fire: Blu Ray Review

Released by Sony Home Ent

Ben Wheatley's Free Fire is a film best described as an HR issue that gets out of control.

Free Fire: Blu Ray ReviewWith an all star cast, a 70s setting and a single location, Wheatley essentially sets up a shoot-out that runs the course of 90 minutes.

Centring on a gun deal that goes awry, Wheatley's trademark black humour and one-liners are once again present and correct as the genre-nodding film hits all the expected moments.

From the likes of Brie Larson to Michael Smiley, there's plenty of character moments here but at times, it feels little more than a dress up party with guns to shoot. But there are some very funny and unexpected moments as the story of betrayal plays out.

Wheatley has a cinematic eye for what's needed and uses some clever trickery to pad out the use of the sole location. It may not always hit the target in terms of a deeper connection, but at 90 minutes, Free Fire just about manages not to over-stay its welcome.

It's not Wheatley at its best, but with a stellar cast and a boys-own mentality here and there, it's a solid enough film to entertain a night at home.

6 Days: Film Review

6 Days: Film Review

Cast: Mark Strong, Abbie Cornish, Jamie Bell
Director: Toa Fraser

"Aggression's good, but control's the key"

It's a line uttered to an SAS trooper getting ready to storm the Iranian Embassy, but it could equally be applied to New Zealand director Toa Fraser's new thriller, 6 Days, the second offering of his out this week.

Billed by producer Matthew Metcalfe as our take on a world event, Dead Lands director Toa Fraser delivers an assured and steady re-telling of the events of the Iranian Embassy siege in London in 1980.

6 Days: NZIFF Review

For those unfamiliar with the events, (most likely many outside of England itself, where it was a defining televisual and news moment), six Iranians stormed the Embassy, barricading themselves in and took 26 people hostage.

In the ensuing six days of the siege, police, negotiators and camera crews followed the tension and tried to resolve the situation, set as it was against a backdrop of increasing terrorist threats and governments caving to various demands.

Toa Fraser's calm and steady portrayal of the build up to the inevitable break down of negotiations and subsequent storming of the building proves to be relatively fuss-free.

It begins with the six casually walking in and taking over - there's no discussion of who they are, what their backgrounds are etc, it's simply a case of the execution of a job being done.

Equally, Fraser and script writer Glenn Standring's fuss-free approach to re-telling it all means this really does stick to the facts and quite simply gets on with the job. By powering through the days, taking in differing perspectives from the SAS training and running through scenarios, to the pomposity of Cabinet ministers coolly debating what needs to happen, 6 Days isn't really interested in providing either a glorified take on things or a gung-ho guns blazing approach to it all.

Using a stalwart Mark Strong as the hostage negotiator proves to be Fraser's winning moment, as Max Vernon's fragility and desperation to solve it all are clearly etched on his face. Abbie Cornish delivers a clipped English approach to the veteran BBC correspondent Kate Adie, and Jamie Bell brings a workmanlike pace to Rusty the SAS squad head honcho.

By stripping the film back and cutting off the soundtrack to showcase the sounds of the situation, Fraser brings a tension to bear throughout that's palpable, if not riveting. Characters are given the briefest of once overs, and end up feeling like cut-outs in context (though anything more than the slightest edges would have given this almost documentary-like pace an unnecessary edge).

With a smattering of humour and some nice touches (such as the SAS all geared up and bathed in green light as they ready themselves repeatedly), 6 Days is a solid film which delivers a solid recounting of events.

It may rightfully lack some of the edges of the usual of its fare, but that's a good thing here and if anything, the devil's in the detail, from the period trimmings to the atmosphere of the Sword of Damocles hanging over them all. By choosing not to morally apply judgements to all those involved, Fraser's multi-faceted approach to Standring's sensible script makes 6 Days a solid film that's worthy of showcasing his versatility as a director.

The Free Man: Film Review

Director: Toa Fraser

Starting with a Sartre quote that "Man is condemned to be free", director Toa Fraser's latest doco is perhaps incorrectly being sold as a look at Jossi Wells, the NZ free-skier and his interest in the sport.
The Free Man: NZIFF Review

But what it actually is, is more of a meditation on what inspires people to be involved in extreme sports, and is more of a look at the Flying Frenchies, a pair of French guys who started a company of base-jumping and high-lining. Added into the mix is the inclusion of Jossi Wells, who starts training with the Frenchies to be able to cross a zipline in the French Alps.

Fraser creates a typical documentary set up in the start, detailing a bit more about Jossi and how he got into sport before switching the film's focus away from this and more into the psychology of extreme sports and whether it's man's desire to push the edges and visit the void.

That's potentially some of the problem with The Free Man, in that it doesn't quite seem to know what exactly it wants to be as it unspools. Loaded with slightly po-faced questioning and voiceover that equates the director to those walking a high-wire, The Free Man's philosophical edges may be enough to put some people off.

However, what helps it, is the incredible footage of extreme sports and also the camaraderies that emerge from between the Frenchies and Wells.

Using a locked off camera and some truly vertigo-inducing shots, Fraser manages to spin out some magnificently existential moments as you end up questioning why people are doing this. It doesn't quite get into the psyche as well as perhaps it intends to do, but The Free Man reminds once again of the adrenaline thrill that people get from being involved in such pursuits.

Perhaps if The Free Man had had a slightly tighter focus on perhaps just one angle and one group, it may have been a more precisely delivered documentary; as it is currently, its thoughtful edges and desire to create metaphors mean it feels a little tonally jerky, almost as if it's caught on its own high wire of being.
