Based on the hit Netflix series, and taking in karate via way of the kind of mechanics you saw back in Ape Escape, Cobra Kai 2: Dojos Rising is a curious misfire that doesn't quite live up to its premise.

Cobra Kai 2: Dojos Rising: PS5 Review

Continuing the intense rivalry at the heart of the Cobra Kai saga, the game begins by making you choose your dojo – Eagle Fang, Cobra Kai or Miyagi-Do – and build up a team of hard-hitting fighters from the series to battle anyone who stands in your way to victory.

Each dojo has different power combinations and differing power ups as you head towards trying to secure your legacy as the All Valley Karate Grand Champion.

There are different ways to win either via obstacle races, dialogue fights or good ole fashioned beat-em-ups, but Cobra Kai 2: Dojos Rising doesn't quite get the mix right of what it wants to do. Leading with a chunky visual style, the game's more about cutesy than actually interesting in fighting mechanics.

Except in the tournament fights - it's here the game's style becomes more obvious and the draw a little more understandable. Strategy is needed for the confined fight arenas, but it pays off when you're able to progress because of the skillsets you've been able to deploy.

Cobra Kai 2: Dojos Rising: PS5 Review

There is some charm in the way Cobra Kai 2: Dojos Rising channels the Cobra Kai series but in truth, it's fleeting. The game isn't a complete disaster, but sadly, it's not exactly a roaring success either.
