Ice Road: Vengeance: Movie Review

Ice Road: Vengeance: Movie Review

Cast: Liam Neeson, Fan Bingbing
Director: Jonathan Hensleigh

2021's Ice Road saw Liam Neeson get behind the wheel of a big rig and exact vengeance on those who crossed his path in a story that was suited for streaming and leaving your brain at the door.

The sequel, some four years later, comes unwanted and in truth, feels depressingly like Neeson's phoning it in for a paycheque rather than anything vital or compelling.

This time, setting out to honour his dead brother's wish to scatter his ashes on Mount Everest, Neeson's Mike is grappling both survivor's guilt and an uncertain career path. But as he boards a Kiwi Express bus to take him across Nepal, he finds himself caught in a mercenary war and a fight to get a hydroelectric dam built as part of an illegal land grab.

Ice Road: Vengeance: Movie Review

Cornered by mercenaries and trapped in a battle he wants no part of, Mike must once again use his very particular set of skills to try and save the day.

There's little original on display in this, an action thriller that ticks every rote box it can.

While Mike's initially sidelined from doing any driving, events soon conspire against him and he's back behind the wheel, ducking bullets and dishing up ass-whoopings in between the bullets being fired his way.

But most of the time, Neeson looks weary and drained as Mike in this, with much of the action feeling like it's a strain for him to achieve. It's little helped by the fact proceedings are delivered in such a workmanlike way that the whole thing isn't remotely fun when it could be.

Cramped coach-based ass-kickings are simply a case of choreographed fights that are largely led by Mike and Fan Bingbing's Nepal guide turned ninja Dhan but lack a feeling of any kind of urgency.

Clocking in at just under two hours doesn't help either and while it lacks some of the edge of The Ice Road and the element of surprise, Ice Road: Vengeance makes a strong case for Neeson to stop with these VOD films and their middling deliveries which continue to tarnish his previous outstanding career achievements.

Ice Road Vengeance streams on Prime Video from September 3.

Patapon 1 + 2 Replay: PS5 Review

Patapon 1 + 2 Replay: PS5 Review

Published by Bandai Namco
Platform: PS5

It's back to Earthend with the remaster of these games for the PS5 that first blessed the PSP back in 2007 and 2008.

The rhythm games can sometimes be the trickiest to master and the Patapon series has always been one that required precision as it carried out its somewhat bizarre story - that you, the player, are the god to the Patapon and must return them to their home, all the while fighting off enemies in their path.

Using the various buttons on the PS Controller, you can move them on, defeat various enemies, amass bounty and return to the Patapons' city of Patapolis. The levels themselves are short, and simple to do with basically a series of challenges and fights with creatures lying ahead - it's not exactly long-form gaming, and while it's engaging enough to start off with, the repetitive nature of the gameplay soon begins to grate.

Patapon 1 + 2 Replay: PS5 Review

There's a need to ensure you keep the rhythm obviously, but a misstep can set all the Patapons back, so there's a gradual learning curve, and the harder you hit, the better the chances the fight will be curtailed and the quicker you will get new items to your inventory. There's definitely the feeling of a portable game being moved across to a console, and while that's not a negative ultimately, it may leave you feeling there's a brevity to what transpires and making the repetition more of a challenge.

The game looks nice, with the HD qualities making the crisp eyeball characters stand out and presents the surroundings with a clarity that's watchable enough. If you like rhythm games, then this will hit the beat for you and more than delivers on the genre.

Where it works though is in its simplicity - and while it's more likely to appeal to younger players thanks to the rhythm and repetition, there's something to be said for a family game like this in a generally solo crowded marketplace.

Shinobi: Art of Vengeance: PS5 Review

Shinobi: Art of Vengeance: PS5 Review

Developed by LizardCube
Published by SEGA
Platform: PS5

A 2D action platformer doesn't need to be anything radical.

It doesn't need to reinvent the gaming wheel, nor does it need to provide game-changing thrills in its execution. Simply put, what it does need to do is provide a fluid experience that engages the player and provides continual reason to play on.

Shinobi: Art of Vengeance: PS5 Review

To say Shinobi: Art of Vengeance does that and more is not to damn it with feint praise.

This release from SEGA has an old-school feeling that's both welcoming and enjoyable as it puts you squarely in the ninja shoes of Joe Mushashi who is forced to spring into action when his village is attacked.

With hordes of bad guys heading his way and bosses to defeat, Joe must leap over ruins, bound through the ashes and rise to fend off destiny as it barrels toward him in a destructive way.

Shinobi: Art of Vengeance: PS5 Review

It's no hyperbole to say that Shinobi: Art of Vengeance is the kind of slick game you would have spent hours pouring coins into in an arcade. To say that it's simple gaming isn't to insult it - this is the kind of game that requires combos to take down enemies, requires a bit of precision button pressing to reach higher ground and needs as many reflexes as Musashi demonstrates to get through.

But what's most obvious about Shinobi: Art of Vengeance is just how fluid and responsive the controls are. They're nimble when they need to be as you roll through bad guys, surprise them with attacks and then leap back into a ninja stance to make sure you survive the next level.

With its hand-drawn art style and Street Fighter-esque fight graphics, Shinobi: Art of Vengeance is easily one of the best most playable games of the year. It knows exactly what it wants to do, does it and ensures you have a good time doing it.

Shadow Labyrinth: PS5 Review

Shadow Labyrinth: PS5 Review

Developed by Bandai Namco Studios
Published by Bandai Namco
Platform: PS5

45 years is a long time for a gaming icon to survive.

Shadow Labyrinth: PS5 Review

And arguably Pac-Man, when it was released in 1980, painted itself into a corner - it was a very simple premise: consume the dots, kill the ghosts and escape the maze. Perhaps the key to its success was its simplicity and its ability to do exactly what was expected.

But over the years, game makers have taken on the challenge of Pac-Man and fiddled with the expectations. None more so than Shadow Labyrinth, a Metroidvania style take on the yellow peril that sees you an unnamed warrior forced to team up with a mysterious floating orb called Puck and try to break your way out of a prison and into a wider world.

Essentially a hack and slash platformer, Shadow Labyrinth succeeds in doing something different with the iconic character and imbuing the universe with a sense of mystery. Sure there are elements of the original game as you get to transform into the Pac-Man and consume dots, but there's more to this than just simple reverence.

Shadow Labyrinth: PS5 Review

A feeling of difference soaks into both the art and execution of the game, ensuring that platform fans have something to engage with - and while some may feel the whole game itself doesn't feel like it's one thing or another, those familiar with Pac-Man and its lore will be intrigued by the darker take on what plays out.

Atmospheric, dark and with some tough boss fights - as well as some retro surprises - Shadow Labyrinth shows there's a whole world beyond just mazes for Pac-Man or competitive game elements chomping against each other.

The Toxic Avenger: Movie Review

The Toxic Avenger: Movie Review

Cast: Peter Dinklage, Jacob Tremblay, Kevin Bacon, Julia Davis, Elijah Wood
Director: Macon Blair

Perhaps the greatest recommendation The Toxic Avenger can receive is that of it feeling like it's a film that's been assembled in someone's basement, a film that's controlled in its shabbiness, yet happy to embrace the lo-fi end for the love of its genre audience.

A fully committed Dinklage plays Winston, the janitor at the local chemical megacorp run by Kevin Bacon's sleazy CEO Bob Garbinger.

The Toxic Avenger: Movie Review

With his wife recently dead and his stepson distant to say the least, Winston is not having the best times. Something that's further compounded by a terminal diagnosis that can't be helped by a lack of healthcare from the company he's spent decades with.

Inadvertently crossing paths with a whistle-blower, Winston's killed and dumped in a toxic pool, before transforming into an avenging monstrosity.

With a film like this, it's important to not take it too seriously or to delve too deeply into most of what happens, given how slight a lot of it feels.

That's not to say there's not coherence here, but given it opens with someone being shot several times before being blasted through a window, it's clearly not aiming for high art - and nor would the Troma genre claim otherwise.

Embracing its Troma edges and innate blood and guts works - as does an all-in Dinklage - but yet there are parts here which feel muted and occasionally drawn out from what somehow manages to be a long  90 minute film.

Yet when it fires and the humour is both deadpan and overt, The Toxic Avenger feels like the trashy time it's aiming for. Director Macon Blair keeps things on the right side of lo-fi, but there's never any aspiration to make this generate a wider appeal for audiences outside of the genre it's dipped its toxic toes into.

Ultimately, The Toxic Avenger embraces the blood and guts of the genre, but the film itself never really rises beyond a mixed bag - even with the likes of Wood, who plays a kind of cross between Oswald Cobblepot and Peter Lorre and Dinklage, who gives a sadness to his Winston - the film can't do anything other than what it sets out to.

Which in this case feels like a missed opportunity.

Caught Stealing: Movie Review

Caught Stealing: Movie Review

Cast: Austin Butler, Zoe Kravitz, Matt Smith, Liev Schreiber, Vincent D'Onfrio
Director: Darren Aronofsky

When former baseball player Hank Thompson (Elvis star Butler) is asked to babysit his punk rocker's (Doctor Who star Matt Smith) cat, he thinks it's a simple job. Albeit one he doesn't actually want.

Caught Stealing: Movie Review

But without warning, he's plunged into a world of guns and gangs after being attacked at the flat in this latest from Requiem For a Dream director Darren Aronofsky.

Attacked without warning on the doorstep of the flat by Russian mobsters, Hank suddenly finds himself victim of circumstance as he's caught up in the chaos of 1998 New York, with its sleazy edges and its fighting between gangs.

Torn by his past, ripped by alcohol addiction and hoping to find a way out with his new girlfriend paramedic Yvonne (played by Zoe Kravitz), Butler's Hank should be a compelling hero - a guy in the wrong place at the wrong time trying to do the right thing. But the script doesn't seem to know exactly what it wants to be - is it a comedy with violent edges or is it a gangster film with comedic moments and a straight-laced guy slap bang in the middle of it.

As a result, Caught Stealing feels like a tonal whiplash of a mix of styles that sort of gel, but also sort of don't.

Smith is a blast of scenery-chewing air as the brash punk Russ, but his presence is too limited - and most of what needs to be done has to be carried by Hank himself. Butler manages to keep the character on the straight and narrow and adds a level of soulfulness to proceedings - but with slim scripting around him, and an over-reliance on a flashback, there's a feeling of not quite enough to grapple here.

Sure, the story is about finally taking ownership of a past and moving on, but there's little to no subtlety here when that moment comes, no feeling of punch-the-air redemption when there should be.

Ultimately, Caught Stealing steals a few moments, but they're too few and far inbetween to feel anything other than just hollow victories, sadly.

Logitech G522 Headset: Review

Logitech G522 Headset: Review

Mid-range headphone sets are a must these days, what with cost-of-living crises rumbling on and people looking for a sensible alternative to help while away the time.

Logitech G522 Headset: Review

Logitech is aware of those pressures and has released the Logitech G522 headset for gamers and those looking to casually use headphones for their own needs. (The set retails at $349.99).

And while the set's more suited to a gaming environment than everyday use, there are some options to use the headphones for day-to-day business. But in truth, that's not the core reason to own these.

With a sleek design that's comfortable for long-term wear and tear and a microphone that delivers a crystal-clear quality of sound, the headset's clearly been designed with the user in mind, rather than what the company wants to deliver.

As a result, the set does what it needs to - and comfortably so.

While the flashing RGB lights and subtle colours mark it out as different, their inclusion is purely a cosmetic one for those more likely to be on camera and for those who prefer to be colourful in the confines of their own gaming environment. It clearly isn't for anyone who wants to sit quietly in a chair listening to music - although if that's your desire too, that's not a bad thing.

Logitech G522 Headset: Review

With access to the G Hub to finetune the audio output, there's enough possibility to tinker with what you need for sound, and again, ensuring the customisation of these headphones makes it clear that Logitech is merely a platform provider, with its focus being on the customer alone.

At the end of the day, while the 48 mHz/ 16 bit microphone provides crisp audio both on the receiving and sending out ends, the set is really about two things only - comfort and sound quality.

While there's a limited adjustability for the headset itself, the headband and ear cups are comfortable, ensuring long sessions will be rewarded with little sweat, discomfort and a lack of those marks on the side of your head.

But it's the sound that continues to impress, with atmospheric games supported by the DTS sound and the snugness of the earcups ensuring there's no audio bleed. From first person shooters with their need for communication to simply online gaming, the set works well with no lag from what's on screen filtering into your head.

Logitech G522 Headset: Review

If the RGB function's not enabled, the battery life can last upto 60 hours, ensuring that you can easily do what you need to do with them without worrying about whether they're going to give up.

Ultimately, the Logitech G522 make a solid argument for an investment. Given Black Friday and Christmas sales are coming up, there could be a chance of scoring them at a lesser price - however, if you're serious about audio quality, comfort and durability, the Logitech G522 make a spectacular argument for ownership.

Logitech G522 key features:

  • Bold, sleek design with customisable LIGHTSYNC RGB—up to 16.8 million colours.
  • 48kHz/16-bit mic delivers crystal-clear voice and stream-ready sound.
  • PRO-G drivers and 48kHz/24-bit audio for rich, low-distortion sound and deep bass.
  • Switch seamlessly between LIGHTSPEED Wireless, Bluetooth, and USB-C.
  • Lightweight build with breathable headband and cushioned ear cups for a better fit.
  • Customise mic and EQ with Blue VO!CE and G HUB or the G mobile app.
  • Up to 60 hours battery life and 30m wireless range with signature G5 performance.

Thunderbolts*: Disney+ Movie Review

Thunderbolts*: Disney+ Movie Review

Cast: Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, David Harbour, Olga Kurylenko, Julia Louis Dreyfus
Director: Jake Schreier

After the somewhat underwhelming Captain America: Brave New World, the pressure's back on Marvel to deliver a cinematic tentpole worthy of their oeuvre.

Thunderbolts*: Movie Review

Step forward Thunderbolts*, a movie about a ragtag bag of reformed villains looking to do the right thing. Less Avengers, more Suicide Squad - but with plenty of issues.

And the film largely lands, thanks to an incredible performance from Pugh as the damaged Yelena, still struggling with the loss of her sister Black Widow and searching for her meaning and purpose after hit after psychological hit.

Best experienced spoiler-free, loosely the plot of Thunderbolts* concerns itself with a ragtag group comprising Yelena, the first Captain America, Taskmaster, Ghost and Red Guardian. When Julia Louis-Dreyfus' Valentina is threatened with impeachment by Congress, she decides to eliminate her dodgy past - which means literally burning her bridges with the operatives she's deployed in the past.

However, when the gang is forced to team up for survival, they uncover a greater threat that needs addressing.

With trauma, suicide, depression and darkness swathing large parts of Thunderbolts*, the film can feel like the least Marvel-led outing for a long time. But in some ways, that's a good thing - particularly here where it gives Pugh the chance to bring some depth to her assassin; and while Harbour provides the comic relief as her father, there are plenty of moments that mine the humanity of the father-daughter relationship in ways that feel grounded and real.

Slices of visuals from The Boys and Homelander creep in, and there's a lot here that feels familiar (in ways too spoiler-heavy to mention) but if Thunderbolts* does anything, it goes a long way to prove that Marvel can pull together relevant films that feel both timely and timeless.

From dealing with toxic male behaviour to blatant fragility, the film does take some very wild swings, and tonally doesn't always quite match up. Yet it proves to be compelling enough to be enjoyable for its two hour pacing.

And given Marvel's relative uneven edges to Phase Five of its existence, that really does leave this one feeling like a Thunderbolt out of the blue.

Thunderbolts* is streaming on Disney+ from August 27.

The Naked Gun: Movie Review

The Naked Gun: Movie Review

Cast: Liam Neeson, Pamela Anderson, Paul Walter Hauser, Danny Huston, CCH Pounder
Director: Akiva Schaffer

The 2025 take on the Leslie Nielsen classic franchise is clearly a lesson in reverent love.

The Naked Gun: Movie Review

Persuaded by Seth MacFarlane and his production company Fuzzy Door, Neeson takes on the role of Frank Drebin Jr and into the inane silliness of the Police Squad. When Drebin goes too far in a bank robbery acting above the law, he's confined to traffic duty.

His first job sees him investigating an apparent suicide of a car going off a cliff - but he soon suspects there's more to do the case than meets the eye. And when he meets a dame (Anderson) and a tech bro (Huston), he decides to disobey protocol to carry out his investigation.

The 2025 version of The Naked Gun has its moments.

It's clearly taken on the silly wordplay of the originals and the Airplane! series which loved to roll out bad jokes, terrible one-liners and the kind of humour you'd cringe at from your father. And while there's no denying there are moments and one-liners that absolutely reek of silliness and old style corniness, there's occasionally a feeling that it's somewhat forced.

Neeson is effectively game, and the film scores major points for only running for 85 minutes, stretching the joke as far as it can go. But about midway through, it feels like it's run out of steam, a joke that's trying too hard and with a hero that delivers deadpan, yet occasionally feels like he's not quite put his full heart into it.

Perhaps more a success via its marketing than a riotous cinematic success that will endure through the ages, The Naked Gun shows the film's worked in the past because of Leslie Nielsen's rubbery gameness to indulge the plot's fripperies.

More a pale imitation of what went before, The Naked Gun brings the fun, and very limited funnies - but nothing else.

Eenie Meanie: Movie Review

Eenie Meanie: Movie Review

Cast: Samara Weaving, Karl Glusman, Andy Garcia, Steve Zahn
Director: Shawn Simmons

Ready or Not's Samara Weaving stars as Edie in this heist movie.

Eenie Meanie: Movie Review

Spinning a story that's been told in many ways before, but gifting it a beating heart in the shape of Samara Weaving, Eenie Meanie is the story of Edie (Weaving) who finds her desperate attempts to leave behind a life of bad decisions thrust upon her thwarted thanks to those around her.

After years of living on the straight and narrow with only a few bumps along the way, Edie ends up back in the orbit of John (Glusman), who brings her trouble thanks to his ability to make the wrong decisions in situations that could benefit him.

So when local gangster and Edie's former employer Nico (Garcia) threatens to have him killed unless she drives getaway for a $3million casino heist, Edie is forced into one last job to clear a debt.

Further complicated by her own family situation, Edie must fight for her future - when everything appears to be going wrong.

Eenie Meanie has a kind of punkish vibe that's endearing, with moments of unexpected comedy punctuating proceedings. First-time director Simmons keeps things on a workman-like track, which in this case is no bad thing.

A whole hour is dedicated to building a sense of backstory and connection to Edie and it works wonders with Weaving making her Edie both capable and in charge of the chaos unfolding around her. So when the eventual heist kicks off, it means you're all in and ready to go with a sense of connection that's been earned rather than thrust upon the audience.

Packing a powerful punch and a last-minute surprise, Eenie Meanie is a solidly executed film that excels when you'd least expect it and provides yet another showcase of why Weaving is one of the best of her generation - and also sadly one of the most overlooked in the context of a wider industry.

Eenie Meanie is now streaming on Disney+

Jordan Elsass earned recognition as Jonathan Kent in Superman & Lois, playing the other son of Clark Kent and Lois Lane.
