R-Type Delta is the kind of game you can deem a classic.

And you can also deem it quite difficult, some 40 years after it was first released for the PSOne. A shoot-em-up that is a sidescroller, the game has a penchant for putting you in extremely difficult positions or ones that seem simple that see you lamenting it being over when you make the tiniest of mistakes.

That's the thing with this remaster of R-Type: Delta: HD Boosted. It's actually still extremely difficult to stay alive as the enemies head toward you. Whether it's cannon fodder being fired at you, or just endless waves of craft in the sky or on the ground, the game's ability to see you lose it all in just one second is irritating to say the least.

While lo-res graphics may be a thing of the past with the remaster, and the decision to allow a more modern soundtrack is nothing short of puzzling, the game's playability is still as good as it was back then. You do need to be able to remember how waves play out, but R-Type: Delta: HD Boosted - when it all comes together - is nothing short of compelling.

With three different craft to choose from and growing add-ons available in levels, there's much to play for with this game and if you can stomach the frustrations of dying when you least expect it and losing the weaponry you've built up, there's a challenging, yet enjoyable, shoot-em-up to enjoy,

Perhaps the biggest frustration is an inability to choose chapters and you have to play through from the start - but R-Type: Delta: HD Boosted is a great remaster of a nostalgia title that really does offer the kind of challenging gameplay which has become less commonplace sadly these days.
