It's hard releasing a sports sim every year and keeping core players engaged.

But much like actual football itself, EA Sports FC 25 has made minor tweaks in the gameplay to improve the standings of your teams and the beautiful game itself.

EA FC Sports 25: PS5 Review

Whereas EA Sports FC 24 felt like a much-needed vital change for its frst iteration away, the latest offering feels like building on that - albeit slightly.

Adding four new features - FC IQ, an overhaul of the tactical system; Player Roles, which solidifies how they're invovled in their teams,; Goalkeeper Play Styles to give them more depth and 5v5 Rush mode, a new competitive 5 v 5 element - make minor differences, but given how enjoyable EA Sports FC24 was, it feels like just little edges for the release.

Rush Mode is tremendous fun, a game experience that is accessible to all and benefits from it. Fast paced and only seven minutes long, the game's speed makes it enjoyable and fun - no matter what skill level you are at. (Though the limited commentary entries grind your gears after a while).

The usual 11 v 11 games still crackle too - and while they're all top notch quality football gaming they're not massively different from previous years. Graphically the game's faces feel like a little drop down from previous years, but the fluidity of how it plays out is the most imperative thing here - and it still does so brilliantly.

Though if you enjoy multiple tweakings, the game's catering for you more this year, giving you the chance to fiddle with each player. It's adding in elements of Football Manager which seem like a good idea - though how deep you're going to want to go with this will depend on your desire to spend less time on the virtual pitch.

It's hard to deny the drive of EA Sports FC 25 and how it makes the beautiful game fun. But it doesn't feel like this year's iteration feels like an essential purchase in some ways. Yet, if you've never experienced the thrill of EA Sports franchise, this is as close to a perfect jumping-on point as ever you'd need.

Perhaps it's time to rest this series and leave an annual gap between each one - but if you want a sim to play with family and friends, you can't do much wrong with EA FC Sports 25.
