The Boogeyman: Movie Review

The Boogeyman: Movie Review

Cast: Sophie Thatcher, Chris Messina, David Dastmalchian, Vivien Lyra Blair
Director: Rob Savage

There's much that works in the atmospheric The Boogeyman, adapted from the short story by Stephen King and starring Yellowjackets' Thatcher.

The Boogeyman: Movie Review

Equally though, in expanding out an 18 page story, there is also a portion of The Boogeyman that doesn't work as well as it could.

Functioning as a story on trauma and grief, it's the tale of siblings Sadie (Thatcher) and Sawyer (Blair) who are having differing reactions to the death of their mother in a car accident. Their father Will (Air's Messina) is shut off, refusing to listen to any of his elder daughter's concerns about what happens next - and ignoring the fact his youngest Sawyer is absolutely terrified of the dark, insisting on nightly closet inspections and sleeping with a lightball firmly gripped to her chest.

However, when Will's visited by a seemingly dangerous patient (a cameo from Dastmalchian), all of their worlds are irrevocably changed...

Making the most of what troubles children and those of a nervous disposition proves to be beneficial for The Boogeyman's Savage as he crafts a haunting film that only really flounders when it veers out of the core horror dynamics and under laws of logic.

The Boogeyman: Movie Review

Thatcher's troubled and tortured character is well-realised by an actress who is able to imbue her fairly stereotypical story arc with some nuances; certainly when paired with Blair, the duo seem plausible and their fear tangible.

But the script's insistence of fleshing out moments that don't require any additional focus and in bringing in one character for the sole purposes of exposition threaten to topple the atmospherics already created. And certainly in the film's finale, The Boogeyman leans too heavily into the schlockier edges of a King-related script and unoriginal tropes from the genre.

While it may be a little drawn out in parts, when concentrating on the horror basics, and tapping into universal fears of the nighttime, The Boogeyman proves to be wildly effective and occasionally nerve-shreddingly terrifying.

It's just a shame the mantra of pursuing a creature "thing that comes for your kids when you're not paying attention" is diluted and overcomplicated a little too much throughout.

Home Sheep Home: Farmageddon Party Edition: PS5 Review

Home Sheep Home: Farmageddon Party Edition: PS5 Review

Developed by Aardman and Mobile Pie
Platform: PS5

Shaun The Sheep's latest game venture on the console is one that bears all the hallmarks of a mobile game writ large on a wider canvas.
Home Sheep Home: Farmageddon Party Edition: PS5 Review

But that's not necessarily a bad thing for one of Aardman's more favoured characters, though in parts, it does feel like it could have been touched up a little more for a different audience.

Essentially a series of logic challenges aimed at moving three different sizes of sheep (Timmy, Shaun and Shirley) from one side of the screen to the other, Home Sheep Home: Farmageddon Party Edition works best when several other players join in and you work co-operatively to solve the puzzles in time and get rewards for progression in return.

In truth, it's a very simple concept, very simply executed. But occasionally that minimalism of execution does leave you feeling like you're playing a mobile game that's simply been ported across.

Despite the abundance of terrible puns, and the lovingly crafted visuals of Shaun and his pals, there's little in levels other than the baaing of the sheep to grace the earways. Graphically, the game's simplicity works to its advantage, with clear crisp pencilled visuals meaning you're focussing more on the gameplay than what is actually on the screen.
Home Sheep Home: Farmageddon Party Edition: PS5 Review

Each sheep has its own advantage to bring to the party - Timmy is tiny, Shaun can jump great distances and heights and Shirley can shift larger objects. Sometimes though the puzzles require a bit of lateral thinking to solve, and this is perhaps where the party elements of the game work better as bouncing off ideas with a comrade proves to be more insightful.

With movie-themed party games, and a Farmageddon injection, Home Sheep Home feels like the complete package that will have many family fans flocking to its gameplay. You'll be surprised how much time you'll want to spend in Mossy Bottom and invigorated by the fact this is a game that gives you cause to think.

Mister Organ: Blu Ray Review

Mister Organ: Blu Ray Review

Director: David Farrier

Tickled director David Farrier's latest is an intriguing affair, an exploration of what happens when a filmmaker becomes too attached to its subject and what happens when the strands of reality become too far entangled to unwind.

Mister Organ: Movie Review

As ever with Farrier's intrigue at falling down a rabbit hole, it's the story of how he spent 5 years investigating what would appear to have been a simple case of a bully overzealously clamping people outside an Auckland shop which developed into a toxic relationship that may have you in mind of Louis Theroux's investigative friendship with Jimmy Savile.

As Farrier investigates Michael Organ the man behind the clamping farrago, a trail of victims whose lives have been irrevocably ruined by this narcissist begin to emerge - and much like a moth to a flame, Farrier edges closer into Organ's orbit with no real indication he's able to pull out.

The initially frivolous edges of Mister Organ soon give way to a darker tinged piece that really start to show Farrier coming unhinged, rather than his documentary subject. It's a fascinating insight into how obsession can unravel, and it's genuinely upsetting to see this documentary maker almost destroyed by half a decade's worth of time consumed.

Mister Organ: Movie Review

Whilst the doco makes strenuous mention of the time involved, there's little indication of how that's played out on screen, which makes it akin to feeling like Farrier's time with Organ has happened over a week period. While that doesn't detract from his vulnerability, some sense of a time frame would have helped Mister Organ achieve an even more sinister effect.

Wondrously helmed by DP Dominic Fryer, what is really a series of meetings between two people sparkles on screen. The mundanities of small town New Zealand look astonishingly realised, and the seedy underbelly of the world comes to the fore.

There are some frustrations - chiefly, there's never really a sense of understanding why Farrier continues to pursue his subject for years other than to get some answers and because he "really winds up" Farrier himself.

Hints of trouble come from interview subjects who don't really want to be on camera - and an inference one person in Organ's orbit committed suicide because of him is never really addressed directly by its accused.

Yet conversely, it's in these moments the film does come alive though - a sense of a Damocles sword above Farrier's head that he's made for himself, and a tangible feeling that he's never really in control of proceedings - or depressingly, the narrative itself - as he hopes to crack the seemingly dangerous and toxic enigma of Organ.

Best seen unresearched and a depressing portrait of narcissism in its many forms - both in and behind the camera - Mister Organ may leave you with more questions than answers ultimately, but it's a troubling journey that provides no real resolution and leaves you dangling, desperate - and yet terrified - for more.

Eight documentaries Announced for Whānau Mārama: New Zealand International Film Festival

Whānau Mārama: New Zealand International Film Festival (NZIFF) has today announced eight enriching and enlightening documentaries selected to screen at the 2023 festival.

Screened in Official Selection Director’s Fortnight at Cannes 2022, De Humani Corporis Fabrica examines the extraordinary landscape of the human body through a collage of medical imagery and bustling scene reportage from five hospitals in northern Paris.

Eight documentaries Announced for Whānau Mārama: New Zealand International Film Festival

From Blackfish (NZIFF 2013) director Gabriela Cowperthwaite comes The Grab, an eye-opening investigation into the money, influence, and alarming covert efforts of governments and private investors to gain control of the most vital resources on the planet – food and water.

In Ennio Giuseppe Tornatore (The Best Offer NZIFF 2013) pays tribute to legendary composer Ennio Morricone and his prolific career that spanned over seven decades and included the scores to more than 70 award-winning films.

From the Academy Award-winning producers of Searching for Sugar Man (NZIFF 2012) comes Merkel, an engrossing look at the life and career of Angela Merkel, the first female Chancellor of Germany.

Kokomo City explores the lives of four black trans sex workers in New York and Atlanta, a film intended to pay as much attention to fun and beauty as to trauma and violence yet made tragic by the murder of one of its leads just three months after the film premiered at Sundance 2023.

Winning the Golden Bear (Best Film) at Berlin International Film Festival 2023, On the Adamant follows patients and caregivers at a psychiatric centre located on a floating structure in the middle of the Seine in central Paris.

Subject investigates the ethics and responsibility inherent in documentary filmmaking, checking in with the subjects of acclaimed documentaries from the past decade – The Staircase, Hoop Dreams and The Wolfpack (NZIFF 2015) among them – to reveal the true impact of putting one’s life under the microscope for the world to see.

From independent filmmaker Nina Menkes comes Brainwashed: Sex-Camera-Power, a feminist dissection of gender dynamics on screen and the way cinematic objectification leads to real-life discrimination and violence.

By attending film festivals around the world, the NZIFF 2023 programming team brings Aotearoa audiences the very best of global cinema.

The Little Mermaid: Movie Review

The Little Mermaid: Movie Review

Cast: Halle Bailey, Jonah Hauer-King, Art Malik, Javier Bardem, Melissa McCarthy, Daveed Diggs, Awkwafina, Jacob Tremblay

Director: Rob Marshall

Disney continues its back catalogue plundering with its longest entry yet, the human remake of its fantasy musical from 1989, The Little Mermaid.

But it's a reinvention that offers limited pleasures despite an extremely strong lead actress as well as some new songs from Lin-Manuel Miranda, which unfortunately pale when compared to the originals.

For those unaware of the classic animation, it's the story of mermaid Ariel (a resplendent Bailey) who longs to be part of the human world after her father King Triton (Bardem, flat and uninspiring) has forbidden it. But when sea witch Ursula (McCarthy, all sass and menace) offers her a chance to trade in her scales for legs to spend time in the world above the sea, Ariel jumps at it.

The thing with the 2023 remake of The Little Mermaid is that it's a little too safe in its depiction of the story, and were it not for the performances of Bailey, McCarthy and Diggs, the film would have felt limp and uninspired.

Perhaps it's the fact the original is such a superlative blend of vibrant animation and show-stopping numbers, but the latest's generic take on the story feels a little creatively limp and certainly feels its 135 minute length in the initial stages.

The Little Mermaid: Movie Review

It's not helped by Hauer-King's weaker Prince Erik who seems adrift in this adaptation and seems to lack some of the chemistry needed for the romance side of the story. Certainly some of the character adjustments aren't quite explored enough for Erik, and leave him feeling somewhat tepid - as is demonstrated by his new song coming moments after Under the Sea. Added to the mix is a generic feel to the Caribbean locale, which feels like a holiday advert writ large at times with its idyllic and stereotyped shots.

Fortunately, Bailey's charismatic, vibrant performance as the mermaid who longs for more, complete with her powerhouse singing make the 2023 version of Ariel a character for many to admire.

From her Part of This World opening number to the internal singing monologues she's given when muted, Bailey makes her Ariel empathetic and warm. It's something which is matched by Diggs' turn as the comedy crab fussing over the future of his charge - their duet on Under the Sea, the film's Oscar-winning song, is a delight - a wonderfully choreographed sequence that sparkles with sea-life and charm as it unfurls its Calypso beats.

Equally McCarthy's wicked witch complete with tentacles, sass and some killer lines proves to be a formidable foe for Ariel and a career best for her.

While the 2023 reimagination of The Little Mermaid may disappoint some, it will also thrill many - led largely by its lead. If Disney had just had the wherewithal to cut some of the saggy running time and make a few creative tweaks and risks to the film, The Little Mermaid would have been a much-needed revival of the Disney live action movies.

As it is, it's perfectly enjoyable but can't help but leave you feeling it could have been more.

Pearl: Blu Ray Review

Pearl: Blu Ray Review

Cast: Mia Goth, Tandi Wright, David Corenswet, Emma Jenkins-Purro

Director: Ti West

More a a psychological tragedy than an outright slasher horror, Ti West's prequel to X is all about Mia Goth's performance.

Billed as an origin story, and washed in a technicolour swamp of Hollywood homage, it's the story of Pearl (the killer of X), who dreams of a life outside of the crushing confines of her farm, caring for her ill father and being beaten down daily by the psychological torture of her mother (Wright).

Pearl: Movie Review

In the midst of the Spanish flu pandemic of 1918, Pearl believes she is more than a star, and ends up receiving hope in two forms - an audition at a local church for a talent scout and a projectionist who believes she should be up on the screen.

But hope is dangerous for Pearl...

If you're expecting a prequel soaked in blood that follows elements of X, then Ti West's latest will delightfully wrongfoot you and plant you squarely in Goth's orbit as she continues to impress.

From a pitchfork skewered goose to an ultimately upsetting final shot, Goth dominates the screen, riffing on Wizard of Oz references and dealing with Psycho-level portmanteaux. But it's not just the physical performance she delivers here, it's also one which plays into Pearl's psyche and psychosis.

Pearl: Movie Review

It's also extremely upsetting too to see this naive dreamer destroyed in many ways mentally as the film continues, her descent into madness both telegraphed by outside influences and internal doubts. Goth inhabits all of these with veritable aplomb, and while watching Pearl demands you rewatch X straight after, there are plenty of nods from the first film that play into this - an impressive sign of West and Goth's commitment to creating an iconic character of horror in just 240 minutes.

While other horror villains have had years to be portrayed on screen, Goth's Pearl is one for the ages already, and with its reverence of Hollywood's golden era from its score to its visuals, Pearl feels both timely and classic. What it ultimately does though is recontextualise its own pathos and provide something unsettling to audiences already versed in this new horror trilogy.

Pearl will be playing Whanganui, Auckland, Christchurch and Wellington for one off screenings at the Terror-Fi Fest.

Humanity: PS5 Review

Humanity: PS5 Review

Developed by THA
Published by Enhance
Platform: PS5

Reminiscent of both Kula World and Lemmings, Humanity's power lies in its deceptively simple premise and execution.

Playing as a Shiba Inu, you have to bark commands to an endless stream of people and guide them round structures into the light and their ascension. It's as simple as that - but what this third-person, crowd-bossing game hides is an addictivity that proves to be as confounding as it is welcome.

The puzzler game puts you in a 3D room during each level and then throws obstacles in your way as you try and guide the wandering masses to their ultimate resolution. A mysterious power grants the occasional extra ability, ranging from jumping, floating and more later on - but it's largely up to you to consider the best route for survival and to achieve future unlocks.

Humanity: PS5 Review

There's also a twist in proceedings that makes Humanity more than just a puzzler, but to reveal more is to spoil the game's dynamics and also its desire to keep you in its thrall.

Graphically, it's simple stuff that's well executed, and with camera work that largely supports your goals (even in PSVR2 mode) the game is very easy to dive into. But what becomes increasingly harder aside from the puzzles, is the desire to detach from its grip.

The designers have included solutions videos to help on trickier levels (though this saps your success rate and sometimes simply watching the start can provide an answer) but what works best about Humanity is its god powers as you move the masses around. It's fascinating to see, and horrifying in later levels, but what Humanity does is much more than throw puzzles at your mind.

It has a way to get into your subconscious and burrow deep within, a rare puzzle game that will keep you awake for hours, and will burn itself into your life, resulting in "Eureka" moments when you least expect them.

A clever and cerebral way to tickle the grey matter, Humanity is well worth a deep dive.

Humanity is now available as part of PlayStation's PSPlus offering, or can be purchased on its own.

Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores DLC: PS5 Review

Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores DLC: PS5 Review

Developed by Guerrilla Games
Published by Sony Interactive Entertainment
Platform: PS5

The Horizon Forbidden West series continues with this short, but nonetheless sweet, expansion of Aloy's story.

Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores DLC: PS5 Review

Building on what story foundations were laid during Horizon Forbidden West, the Burning Shores expansion adds more depth to Aloy, while bringing a new character to the fore and a first for the series as such - a companion for Aloy.

In pursuit of a lead from Lance Reddick's Sylens, Aloy heads further along America's West Coast to discover more about the Quen tribe and to tackle new monsters. But she also finds a new friend - and perhaps something more - in fellow seeker Seyka...

It's not dismissive to say Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores continues to do what the Horizon series does best - big set pieces in properly visualised backgrounds that work well to their final needs. Along with new robot monsters to take on, this is a game that continues to do its basics and do them well.

Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores DLC: PS5 Review

Visually, the biomes of the Burning Shores feel different yet familiar enough to those who've battled through Horizon Forbidden West. It can't harm that every once and a while you simply find yourself staring at what's around and appreciating it before moving on.

New skills have been added in along with some new weaponry and armour, all of which will add greatly to Aloy's journey - but after all the noise and bluster of the game, it's in the emotions and the interactions that Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores continues to thrive.

With an antagonist that picks up from Horizon Forbidden West, Londra, and a companion that feels organic in Seyka, the game adds welcome depth through its expansion. It  may be lacking in side quests, and feel a little too short for fans' full enjoyment, but these faults are just testament as to how much the world of Horizon and Aloy has become so ingrained into our gaming world.

With hints of more to come, there will be a return surely, and it will be a welcome one.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania: Disney+ Review

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania: Disney+ Review

Cast: Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly, Kathryn Newton, Michelle Pfeiffer, Michael Douglas, Jonathan Majors
Director: Peyton Reed

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania: Movie Review

Returning once again and with the giant-sized job of kicking off Phase 5 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Paul Rudd's Scott Lang finds himself - and his erstwhile family sucked into the Quantum realm when his daughter Cassie (Newton) messes up an experiment.

As they try to escape, Lang and his crew find a new threat rising from deep below and one that Hope's mother (Pfeiffer) had thought long buried and forgotten - Kang The Conqueror (Lovecraft Country's Jonathan Majors).

Largely confined to more larky escapades, Ant-Man goes bigger in this latest Peyton Reed outing - but ironically, despite his size feels sidelined throughout.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania: Movie Review

Serving more as an ensemble riff on a Star Wars cantina cum Disney's Strange World outing in the quantum realm, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania does a great job of seeding Jonathan Majors antagonist Kang as a soft spoken menace - but somehow manages little else.

Forced into groups, Ant-Man and his daughter try to bond despite abandonment issues, while Wasp Hope (Lilly) tries to get answers from her mom - both groups feel Piecemeal at times  with only Rudd's huge empathy and angrier side nicely standing out as proceedings continue.

Newton has fun as Cassie even if the "Even if this isn't your fight you still should" mantra is overtly hammered home repeatedly throughout. While one sequence feels like Majors' first appearance in Lovecraft Country, the action in the weird CGI heavy quantum realm never really rises above the rote full scale destruction we've witnessed countless times before, and grown weary of. And there are narrative issues as an uprising is seeded early on with weird and wonderful creatures, but who are left to become deus ex machina in the film's final act.
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania: Movie Review

Perhaps Marvel could have gone weirder in its animal antics and certainly flexed its multiversal muscles a little more in this its 31st outing. Though it is commendable to see the usually smug Lang suffering more of an existential crisis this time around - and still unsure of his place in the world of the Avengers.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania somehow feels slight in its introduction of its next phase with slow setup shoehorned in after Rudd's initial self-deprecating imposter syndrome humour.

It may aim for epic but with Majors and Rudd really only rising to the occasion and with the film's females vociferously sidelined after strong early ensemble antics, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania feels like a more muted Marvel than a monster-sized kickoff for phase 5.
