She Said: Blu Ray Review

She Said: Blu Ray Review

Cast: Carey Mulligan, Zoe Kazan, Ashley Judd, Patricia Clarkson, Andre Braugher, Jennifer Ehle, Samantha Morton

Director: Maria Schrader

There are moments in Maria Schrader's She Said where the movie transcends its relatively formulaic film about the journalism that dug into the sordid history of a modern Hollywood monster and shines.

She Said: Movie Review

But a large pall is cast over proceedings in the form of the relatively recent revelations of what Harvey Weinstein did to his victims. Wisely though, this film doesn't choose to make Weinstein the "star" of proceedings, preferring instead to give voice to the victims and in giving Ashley Judd screentime, a bizarre redemption story for one so viciously robbed of her voice.

Centring on Mulligan's Megan Twohey as she becomes a mum after breaking the Trump abuse story and also Zoe Kazan's naive yet grizzled Jodi Kantor as they investigate claims of systemic abuse in the workplace for the New York Times, Schrader's film never really feels like it's weighed down by its 2 hour run time.

Picking up the kind of montages you'd have seen in Spotlight or All The President's Men of people huddled round computers and typing, as well as doing good ole fashioned "journalisming", She Said boils down the complexities of the case into a simplistic, easy-to-digest audience piece that revels in its earnestness and forthright approach to telling the story.

She Said: Movie Review

While Mulligan and Kazan are solid compelling watches, the most powerful moments go to Ehle's Laura Madden, Samantha Morton's Zelda Perkins and Ashley Judd. Yet it's also in these moments that Schrader muddies proceedings using cutaways of potential victim scenes to try and hammer home the message they're espousing. But they suffer the opposite effect feeling like the drama's being overegged, when the performances are powerful enough to deliver.

There are some powerhouse moments here in a film that never really goes over the top with its cast or its OST, and while there's an irony of a Hollywood film is being told about a monster in Hollywood that Hollywood kept quiet for decades at play, aside from one almost 4th wall breaking speech about how abusers are still out there, She Said more than delivers a film that's a solid and grounded watch about a horrific subject.

Whether audiences will embrace it is another matter, as there's no real cathartic resolution here for those in the know that Weinstein's legacy chillingly lives on.

But for a film that takes the voices of those it needs to amplify, She Said does more than enough - and could be a contender for Oscar nominations when the time comes.

Bones and All: Blu Ray Review

Bones and All: Blu Ray Review

Cast: Taylor Russell, Timothee Chalamet, Mark Rylance

Director: Luca Guadagnino

Meshing a young adult love affair with a cannibal story may sound like an unusual mix, but Luca Guadagnino's Bones and All plays with familiar story beats while threading a slightly unconventional tale.

Bones and All: Movie Review

Russell plays Maren, a loner who is abandoned by her father at the age of 18, and gets it into her head to track down her missing mother. Forced on the run after an incident at a sleepover (one of the pre-titles best shocks), Maren believes she's alone in the world, her thrust for human flesh an affliction she alone suffers from.

However, when she's sought out by the oddball Sully (Rylance, in a creepy character turn) who professes to share her desires, she finds her world opening up to possibilities. It's a feeling further enhanced when she chances across Chalamet's apparent drifter Lee, another of her kind.

As the two bond, they begin to grow closer as their desires increase.

Bones and All is very much a road trip relationship movie that embraces some of its more shocking moments and presents them as part of a norm, rather than in a salacious light.

Russell makes great fist of the dilemma she faces with her hunger, and Chalamet proves to be an enticing foil to her as she comes of age in the world around her.

Bones and All: Movie Review

But unfortunately, it feels as if Guadagnino spends much of the film looking for an ending - and when it comes, it feels out of leftfield and utterly unsatisfying. Sure, there's a Bonnie and Clyde vibe here as they steal and devour their way in and out of trouble and while Guadagnino crafts some beautifully constructed shots together, there's not as much emotional depth as you'd want here.

Granted, there's the feeling Maren is holding back and Lee is uncertain about life in general, but Bones and All rarely progresses beyond plodding, offering little to entice as it treads soullessly on.

There are moments that engross, but unfortunately Bones and All is not a full three course meal - it's a snackable story that could have had some of the fat trimmed off its meat-cute couple and narrative to make a totally satisfying experience.

The Outer Worlds: Spacer's Choice Edition: PS5 Review

The Outer Worlds: Spacer's Choice Edition: PS5 Review

Developed by Obsidian Entertainment

Released by Private Division

Platform: PS5

The tendrils of Fallout's effect continue to be felt in the gaming world with this updated version of the 2019 game The Outer Worlds.

The Outer Worlds: Spacer's Choice Edition: PS5 Review

Included in the updated version are a raft of new features such as Overhauled lighting and environments, dynamic 4K resolution, enhanced details resulting in more realistic characters and an increased level cap.

But what's not been changed is the game itself, which takes you to a foreign planet, with elements of Bioshock and Fallout all wrapped up in the gameplay.

As you get to re-encounter the universe of Halcyon, you need to take on raiders, build bases and basically upgrade yourself until the game itself opens somewhere around the 15 hour mark, with humour and offbeat moments forwarding the action and eccentricity as it takes place.

Perhaps one of the more clever approaches of The Outer Worlds is the chance to decide early on whether you want to invest your character with brain, wit, brawn or personality. It's a good way to experience the game and chance your arm at the interactions that will come your way, but with balance being the better way to approach things, life in the Halycon universe is a smarter approach to it all.

With plenty of action to manifest through the game and also the option to talk your way out of trouble, The Outer Worlds has different options for the RPG elements of the game - and the fact you can simply dispatch those who annoy you is always a bonus (though not always recommended).

The Outer Worlds: Spacer's Choice Edition: PS5 Review

Having not played the game in its original form, it's hard to say whether the technical improvements are a vast change to the game itself, but The Outer Worlds: Spacer's Choice edition includes all the game's DLC and a smooth technical presentation which is colourful, playable and enjoyable.

While there has been some gnashing of teeth online about the shadow elements of the the game, generally, the texture of the presentation of what is on screen works well for the next generation upgrade, and there's been an improvement in the AI as well for those who partner with you.

If you've already invested in The Outer Worlds and its DLC, maybe the decision to upgrade is a bit more complicated, but based on the playability and the evidence, it's no bad thing to play once again.

Theatrhythm Final Bar Line: PS5 Review

Theatrhythm Final Bar Line: PS5 Review

Developed by indieszero
Released by Square Enix
Platform: PS5

Theatrhythm Final Bar Line is the kind of rhythm game you can addicted to - and even more so if you're a Final Fantasy fan.

Though that said, even if you're not thanks to simple mechanics, simplicity of play and cutesy execution, it's a game anyone can dive into for any amounts of time.

Theatrhythm Final Bar Line: PS5 Review

With 385 carefully curated music tracks from across the Final Fantasy series, the game's raison d'etre is simple - fight baddies while hitting the beats and relive some of the tunes you've loved for years done in a beat game. Meshing the chance to unlock more characters and other levels with a simple narrative, Theatrhythm Final Bar Line isn't a game that really does much more than it says on the tin.

It's true that mixing up characters, adding in elements of perks and ensuring you have a strong group means you can beat whichever baddie the level brings you. But miss a few of the beat combos and suddenly your group is struggling and the level's dangerously close to conclusion.

Each level itself is bitesize and in truth, unless you've got someone sat with you, you can't really see what's going on with the characters because you're busy trying to hit the rhythm. So that's perhaps one of the only real disappointments with Theatrhythm Final Bar Line - no real chance to enjoy what plays out on the screen.

Theatrhythm Final Bar Line: PS5 Review

It may be cutesy in execution but it's minimal in design and narrative, but that's not really what Theatrhythm Final Bar Line wants to do.

If you're a FF fan, this is heavenly game-playing swathed in a music nostalgia that can't be denied. But if you're a casual fan, the music and the simple mechanics make Theatrhythm Final Bar Line something that's a bit more of an addiction to fight.

It won't change the gaming world, but Theatrhythm Final Bar Line's mix of fun and simplicity make it a solid family title that does the best of what rhythm games do, while ensuring a deeper engagement with fans of the genre.

Air: Movie Review

Air: Movie Review

Cast: Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Jason Bateman, Viola Davis

Director: Ben Affleck

A sports underdog story where the underdog is a major sporting company may not sound particularly enticing, but director Ben Affleck's sense of nostalgia and filmmaking prove to be a potent mix for Air.

Air: Movie Review

Damon rolls out his everyman charm as Sonny Vaccaro, a basketball scouter and shoe salesman/ recruiter for the Nike company in the 80s. With pressure on him to sign a new talent for the company with Converse and Adidas sniffing around, Vaccaro reckons an 18-year-old talent Michael Jordan is where the company should hang their hat - but everything's against Nike securing their future.

With its 1984 setting and an opening reel that defines the pop culture from the time, through to an excellent OST that uses the decade's best songs to set the tone, Affleck is keen to be evocative rather than provocative with a biographical film that's high on uplifting tone, but lower in wider drama.

But while keeping a tighter focus on Vaccaro and the Nike crew proves to be compelling, it feels like the Jordan family are kept more at arm's length and with too much reverence. The end result is that, despite a powerful performance from a commanding Davis, they feel more like unknowns than they should be.

Air: Movie Review

It could be a case that perhaps everyone in the world knows who Michael Jordan is, but his relationship to his cinematic audience in Air is one of aloof mystery - and particularly so the one with his mother who drives so much of his story. Which may be understandable given it's about the underdogs of Nike.

Damon is winning in his doggedness, with his workmanlike charm proving to be character you need to cheer for. With humour and heart, Vaccaro emerges as Nike's saviour, but his humanity in his business interactions (as showcased in the opposing strokes proffered by Jordan's agent) gives the film a grounded edge it needs to be winning.

It's a human-fronted thriller that knows what it wants to do, and while there are moments of sagging and a feeling the soundtrack is doing a lot of the obvious narrative signposting, this is a crowd-pleasing story of rags to riches that benefits from an ensemble, and overcomes some of its occasional flaws.

Disney+ Original Series

But when new girl Alexis comes to town and J.B.'s interest in basketball starts to wane, tension starts to brew between the brothers — threatening to break their lifelong bond.

Of course, juggling school, friends, romance, and basketball isn't easy when their mum, the academically gifted Dr. Crystal Bell, is the principal, and their former NBA player dad, Chuck, is the team coach. They only want what's best for the boys, and Chuck's "basketball rules for life" have guided them since they were young. But when Chuck's health starts to decline, the family's foundation starts to crumble — forcing everyone to step up, be selfless, and find faith in each other.

With help from their wise-cracking and loyal friends Maya and Vondie, plus guidance and wisdom from parents and teachers, Filthy and J.B. learn that in the game of life, basketball might not be everything...but family is always a net tied together.

Now the beloved American author candidly shares her own coming-of-age story. Emmy-winning filmmakers Davina Pardo and Leah Wolchok trace Blume’s journey from fearful, imaginative child to storytelling pioneer who elevated the physical and emotional lives of kids and teens, to banned writer who continues to fight back against censorship today. With humour, sensitivity, and a healthy dose of adolescent cringe, Judy Blume Forever tells the story of the woman whose trail-blazing books changed the way millions of readers understand themselves, their sexuality, and what it means to grow up.

Using the very latest technology, each episode will capture dramatic and new behaviour across the British Isles, from battling butterflies to mighty killer whales on the hunt. Nature in these islands will prove just as spectacular as anywhere else on the planet, but it is increasingly fragile. With intricately connected species relying on habitats, and one another, for survival, we ask what can be done to protect them and the delicate ecosystems that remain, and to make these wild isles even wilder for future generations.

Zombieland: Headshot Fever Reloaded: PSVR2 Review

Zombieland: Headshot Fever Reloaded: PSVR2 Review

Developed by XRGames
Platform: PSVR2

Light gun shooters were all the rage in the first iteration of the PlayStation VR headset.

The Until Dawn carny spin off Rush of Blood proved to be the groundbreaker for this, and while it's not entirely a surprise they'd be rolled out for the second iteration of PlayStation's gaming tech, what's surprising with Zombieland: Headshot Fever Reloaded is just how much irreverent fun it all is.

Zombieland: Headshot Fever Reloaded: PSVR2 Review

Set in the world of Zombieland and after the sequel Zombieland: Double Tap, Zombieland: Headshot Fever Reloaded sees you taking the lead role in a rogues' gallery shooting contest the Zombie Invitational.

Set in a hub that's a mansion and with power ups being unlocked by toilet paper, Zombieland: Headshot Fever Reloaded is all about simply letting you head off and stop the apocalypse as they shamble towards you.

With simple directional controls worked by just looking, the cartoony edges of Zombieland: Headshot Fever Reloaded are evident from the start, with its cartoon artwork providing the thrill of the ambling chase.

Zombieland: Headshot Fever Reloaded: PSVR2 Review

Perks include getting more access to more ammo, gaining more toilet paper and generally levelling up through various training elements and missions. It's easy stuff - double shoot a zombie in the head and time slows down, your adrenaline goes sky high and come the end of the round, you gain time for how long you spent in this Matrix-style mode.

With an extra story level, three new remix levels, additional Gun Range challenges, new weapons, this latest iteration of the Zombieland franchise is more about the experience - and while it's kind of piecemeal in its level approach, easy mistakes can still be made.

Zombieland: Headshot Fever Reloaded may not have the original cast voicing their onscreen counterparts, but in all other aspects this on-the-rails carny ride of shooting is fun and disposable enough fun - but makes use of what the PSVR2 has on offer.

Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves: Movie Review

Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves: Movie Review

Cast: Chris Pine, Hugh Grant, Michelle Rodriguez, Daisy Head, Justice Smith, Rege-Jean Page, Sophia Lillis, Daisy Head

Director: Jonathan Goldstein, John Francis Daley

With its tongue firmly in its cheek, but also with an eye on those embroiled in the love of the fantasy genre, Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves manages to provide both fun and heart in a romp that's forgettable afterwards, but enjoyable while it's onscreen.

Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves: Movie Review

An engagingly charismatic Pine plays Edgin, a former thief who's conned by former ally Forge (Grant, in foppish English cad mode) and imprisoned for years after a heist gone wrong. Along with Holga (Rodriguez, all brawn and brass tacks), Edgin breaks out and sets out to reclaim his daughter - but as he assembles a ragtag group to carry out another heist, dark forces amass against him.

It can be hard to master the fripperies and flippancy of a fantasy comedy but for the large part, Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves manages it quite well, even if the stakes feel depressingly low key at times and the world doesn't really stand out visually.

But by upending some of the tropes of the genre (a chubby dragon chase scene, playing fast and loose with the undead, mocking the serious characters such as Paladin in the board game), Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves manages to feel fresh and enjoyable.

In large part that's due to Chris Pine's raffish charm throughout, a leader who's probably got more in keeping with Chris Pratt's Starlord than Gandalf. In every scene, his mix of both weary and winking gives the movie an irreverent boost that it needs as it deals with very familiar situations.

While most of the other characters are relatively familiar (a magician who's lacking self-belief, a brutish warrior who has heart, an overly cocksure braggadocio), the film makes great fist of their quest and gives time with them a touch of heart as it ambles from one sequence to the next. Though, in truth, it could have shaved some of its 130 minute run time with some of the more baggier elements of the story.

Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves: Movie Review

There are many echoes of the Marvel world here (the character interaction, the CGI-led finale) but there's also an affinity to the genre it's from and the board game so beloved by many thanks to a resurgence from Stranger Things. (It's great to see a blink-and-you'll-missit visual nod to the cartoon series so enjoyed by many youngsters during the 80s as well).

It may be that Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves' continual winking means that any peril in the final act feels a little underwhelming, but with a cast whose chemistry and charm come together so well and a deft touch throughout, this film rises above some of its more generic execution to ensure a perfectly impressive, likeable action comedy and amusing night out if you're willing to roll the dice.

A musical shooter may sound like an unusual combo, but Rez Infinite's thrilling port to the PSVR2 makes for a truly enjoyable and immersive experience - if you're willing to cut yourself off from the outside world.

Rez Infinite: PSVR2 Review

With vector and polygonal art, Rez Infinite has a distinct look which makes it stand out from a world of usual other shooters and rhythm based games. You're a hacker that appears to be inside an AI machine and trying to close it down as the AI begins to fight back.

Using directional weaponry and scooting through levels, it's up to you to try and stop the machine - but Rez Infinite is about more than that - especially in its VR iteration. Much of what takes place is really about feeling the game, and sensing the experience (as insane as that sounds) but as you build up in the levels, the game's rhythms become addictive and the playability of the title really kicks in.

Rez Infinite: PSVR2 Review

With eye-tracking technology the star of this port, Rez Infinite makes much of an argument for showing what a 2001 title can do if properly ported across. Taking the place of the aiming and directional weaponry, the eye tracking is the key here and turns it fully into the immersive experience that it always hinted at before.

A nifty little title that's as playable as it is addictive, Rez Infinite is one of the must-have PSVR2 launch titles.

Runner: PSVR2 Review

<Runner>: PSVR2 Review

Developed by TruantPixel
Platform: PSVR2

An arcade inspired VR driving action game, Runner is surprisingly retro, cunningly instinctive and quite thrilling - even if you do feel like you're part of a Tron simulator.

<Runner>: PSVR2 Review

Pulling in elements of the PSVR title The London Heist in terms of its gameplay, Runner sees you atop a motorcycle racing through various vistas and fending off hordes of enemy attackers.

A tutorial gives you some idea of the scale of the game and the scope of the controls. With guns to holster, grenades to pick up and fire out, power ups to collect, and also shields and baddies to take out, there's a lot to master in the tutorial and almost a feel that there's too much and it's overwhelming.

However, once it comes together, you may end up getting the feeling you're back in an arcade, trying desperately to pull the attached guns off their cables and run away with them.

With use of the haptics for the gunplay and no sign of motion sickness at whatever speed you want to play, Runner's crisp execution makes for an experience that shows the indie end of the PSVR spectrum has real potential and is actually more thrilling than its simple graphics would have you believe.

<Runner>: PSVR2 Review

Upgrades to the weapons and the bike between the game's 7 levels help immensely as it speeds through its conclusion, <RUNNER> really does feel like an anime book writ-large. With subtle changes to the views in the levels, the game will suck you in in a way you least expect.

It may not be the flashiest of VR titles, and may not veer too much from its original gameplay, but <RUNNER> makes for an enjoyable arcade-like blast of bitesize gaming that's worthy of your time.

Red White and Brass: Movie Review

Red White and Brass: Movie Review

Cast: John-Paul Foliaki, Mikey Falesiu, Haanz Fa’avae-Jackson, Onetoto Ikavuka, Lupeti Finau, Ilaisaane Green and Lotima Pome’e
Director: Damon Fepulea’i

A film that's bursting with enthusiasm and honesty from every pore, Red, White & Brass is a New Zealand true story that deserves to be embraced by the country, warts and all.

Red White and Brass: Movie Review

Set back in 2011, the movie tells the tale of a big-hearted Tongan rugby enthusiast Maka (an over the top Foliaki) who chances upon a hairbrained scheme when he fails to get tickets for the Rugby World Cup.

Desperate to see Tonga take on their opposition, Maka promises those running the tournament he can provide a Tongan marching band for the pre-game entertainment. But with no instruments, no band and little to no hope of pulling it together in four weeks' time, Maka may have bitten off more than he can chew.

It's very easy to be cynical about an underdog film like Red, White & Brass.

In parts, it feels like some of the characters are underdeveloped and sidelined, with some stereotypes rolled out for dramatic necessity but cast asunder without much after thought.

But what emanates from the screen is nothing but passion and energy, which overcomes some of the first time director Fepulea’i's work. Mixing both the feelgood vibe of the likes of The Full Monty with practically every sports underdog film there ever was and tacking in an element of Ted Lasso's mantra of Believe, Red, White & Brass actually succeeds in its honest intentions.

Red White and Brass: Movie Review

Foliaki is the energy burst Maka needs to carry off the story and his enthusiasm is infectious, even when carrying out the most obvious of moments and the corniest of gags. The rest of his support are all perfectly fine, and do what's needed to turn this business-like movie around.

It all ends up predictably as you'd expect, but what may catch you off guard is just how delightfully it's all doled out. Some parts of the story need a leap of faith, but what it lacks in parts, Red,White & Brass more than makes up for in heart, a sense of pride and a real feelgood film - its familiarity is no bad thing here and may actually end up being its secret weapon.
