Runner: PSVR2 Review

An arcade inspired VR driving action game, Runner is surprisingly retro, cunningly instinctive and quite thrilling - even if you do feel like you're part of a Tron simulator.

Pulling in elements of the PSVR title The London Heist in terms of its gameplay, Runner sees you atop a motorcycle racing through various vistas and fending off hordes of enemy attackers.

A tutorial gives you some idea of the scale of the game and the scope of the controls. With guns to holster, grenades to pick up and fire out, power ups to collect, and also shields and baddies to take out, there's a lot to master in the tutorial and almost a feel that there's too much and it's overwhelming.

However, once it comes together, you may end up getting the feeling you're back in an arcade, trying desperately to pull the attached guns off their cables and run away with them.

With use of the haptics for the gunplay and no sign of motion sickness at whatever speed you want to play, Runner's crisp execution makes for an experience that shows the indie end of the PSVR spectrum has real potential and is actually more thrilling than its simple graphics would have you believe.

Upgrades to the weapons and the bike between the game's 7 levels help immensely as it speeds through its conclusion, <RUNNER> really does feel like an anime book writ-large. With subtle changes to the views in the levels, the game will suck you in in a way you least expect.

It may not be the flashiest of VR titles, and may not veer too much from its original gameplay, but <RUNNER> makes for an enjoyable arcade-like blast of bitesize gaming that's worthy of your time.
