As tricky as any Dark Souls styled game, Lies of P presents an intriguing proposition wrapped up in a steampunk aesthetic.

Lies of P: Xbox Series X Game Review

Inspired by author Carlo Collidi's novel The Adventures of Pinocchio, this third person perspective game puts you in the world of Pinocchio as he fights his way through the city of Krat against other puppets that have rebelled and risen up against the Grand Covenant.

Obviously inspired by the Dark Souls genre, and perhaps even the more Gothic edges of Bloodborne mixed in with elements of We Happy Few, Lies of P is a punishing, challenging and enjoyable romp around a third person player fighter.

With well-tuned combat, Lies of P offers a challenge to most players, and takes some time to master as the game plays out - but what emerges from Lies of P is an extremely innovative take on the fable genre (even if its lead does bear an uncanny resemblance to Timothee Chalamet).

As the game continues, progression rewards patience and a steady learning curve pays dividends as the hack and slash plays out. With a fairytale aesthetic and some darker edges, this takes its cues from other games and of course fairy tales, leaving the player with an occasional feeling this isn't quite the original game you'd want.

But what the developers have done here is tap into the love of the Souls genre and adapt it to their own ends. Sure, you could argue someone else has ended up pulling the strings of this Pinocchio tale, but when it's as playable, as challenging and as dark as this, that's no bad thing.
