Incorporating the first five Metal Gear Solid games that date all the way back to the mid 80s, Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection is an impressive collection that captures the nostalgia of the stealth franchise, but also shows off how ambitious these games were when they were initially released.

Primarily about preservation rather than presentation, a lot of the gameplay in the collection shows off both the good and the bad of the franchise.

In terms of the good, the stealth play is still tense when it needs to be and frustrating when it goes wrong - but in terms of the bad, it's quite repetitive in its mechanics and execution, leading to a feeling that at times the Metal Gear Solid games were somewhat stuck in their own world.

But in this release, the inclusion of gaming books which capture some of the archives of how it all came to pass proves to be the Master Collection's key point of difference.

From the PS1 blockiness of the first game through to the more defined graphics of the latter, what the Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection does is show that evolution of the game and the styles.

Working perhaps best if you temper expectations given how little has been adjusted for modern consoles, Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol 1 is an impressive start to a series and it's to be hoped later releases carry on the good work laid down by this Konami classics release.
