Meshing together the Monkey's Paw idea, Companion's social commentary and ethos along with Pearl and Smile's unsettling edges proves to be extremely fertile ground for Milk & Serial director Curry Barker's fresh and bracing horror movie.

Bear (Johnston, Teen Wolf) is hopelessly in love with his co-worker Nikki (Navarrette, the film's MVP) - their long-term friendship dips into playful banter, finishing each other's sentences and crossing boundaries. But Bear's unable to tell Nikki how he feels, leading him to be permanently friend-zoned.

When she loses a necklace she adores, he seizes on the chance to buy her a gift, then confess his affection. But while shopping in an old antique store, he finds a "One Wish Willow" artefact which can grant the holder the wish of their dreams. After failing to reveal the depth of his adoration when Nikki directly asks him, he uses the artefact to wish she loved him as much as he does...

Trading in both dysfunctional romances and commentary on adoration and co-dependency in relationships, Obsession is a deeply unsettling movie that traffics as much horror from its uncomfortable moments as it possibly can muster.

It helps that Navarrette delivers a truly upsetting performance, one that wildly swings from outright adoration to utter incredulity as to what just happened with ease - and her screams in the moments of her character's swing are just stomach-curdling.

But it's Barker who makes the leap here from a 62-minute found footage short on YouTube to something that's genuinely distressing to behold. With the film's suspense dragged out as much as possible and the brutal jolts delivered with aplomb, Obsession becomes something devilishly nightmarish as it plays out. Drenched in the kind of muted aesthetic which was deployed in It Follows, the film delights in its dour darkness.

It's a film that plays with horrific extremes and does so with glee - and by keeping the cast list small, the shocks are even more upsetting than you'd expect - or hope - them to be. 

Along with the two power performances, Obsession is the horror film you'd least have imagined to leave you reeling - it's 2026's most twisted love story.

Ball x Pit launches expansion Risen Ballbylon on November 12

Great news for fans of Ball x Pit.

The game, which was published by Devolver Digital and developed by Kenny Sun and friends, has announced a new set of levels will be coming on November 12.

The game's already unleashed three free updates, and now this marks the first paid expansion for the acclaimed roguelike.

Developed by Kenny Sun and Friends and published by Devolver Digital, two-million-selling roguelite BALL x PIT is a ball-bouncing, time-devouring smash hit – but the journey is far from over. Prepare yourself, and your balls, for paid expansion Risen Ballbylon.

Risen Ballbylon is the biggest and most transformative expansion for BALL x PIT yet, adding a wealth of new characters, balls, passives, enemies, bosses, buildings, and levels, dramatically expanding the possibilities of a run and introducing fresh new gameplay mechanics to test even the most hardened veterans of the pit. NEW FRONTIERS

 HERO WORSHIP

There are 8 new gameplay-transforming characters to get to grips with in Risen Ballbylon, including the Sentinel, who can aim in any direction, The Stonewaller, whose balls warp to the other side the first time they hit a wall, and The Right Hand Man, whose balls deal double damage when they hit the right wall but only half when they hit the left.

 BALLS TO THE WALL

Risen Ballbylon also adds 24 new balls to the game to experiment with and create powerful, game-changing fusions. These include the Beast ball, which latches onto enemies and damages them until they die, the Kaiju ball, which causes earthquakes, the Misfortune ball, which curses enemies, and the deadly, spiky Hedgehog ball.

BASE INSTINCT

Base-building has also been radically expanded in Risen Ballbylon, with 20 new buildings to expand your village. Build a Floating Fortress, Crystal Monolith, Soup Kitchen, Circus Tent, Fission Chamber, and other strange structures as you expand your base and mine for crystals – a new resource that adds additional complexity to the game’s economy.

Supergirl: Blu Ray Review

Nearly one year after director James Gunn released a revamped Superman movie to relaunch the DC Universe, House of the Dragon's Milly Alcock takes centre stage as Kara Zor-El aka Supergirl.

While Superman has found his place in the universe as a protector of planet Earth, Kara is struggling to discover and define her path. However, when her only other surviving colleague from the planet Krypton, her dog Krypto, is poisoned by space pirate Krem of the Yellow Hills (Schoenaerts) and has only three days left to live, she sets out on a quest for vengeance and to try and save him by getting an antidote.

Based on the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow eight-issue limited run comic series, Craig Gillespie's movie looks to tackle some heady themes, while trying to deepen the Superman world and lore. 

And in parts, it really shines.

Milly Alcock utterly owns what's needed of her here. The difference between her and her cousin Clark is stark. In one line, she says he sees the good in everyone and she sees the truth when asked if they're similar. Alcock's Supergirl has a lot of PTSD to explore and deal with, something that's triggered further by her life on Krypton, which is different from Kal-El's. 

While Superman showed her as a party girl, determined not to take life seriously, it soon becomes clear that it's a mask, an insight that's probably not a surprise to many, but Alcock imbues it with gravitas and heft, as well as inherent sadness after she faces a life without Krypto.

There are also some surprisingly low-key scenes between the two cousins which bookend the film, grounding both of them and probably setting up a dynamic for Man of Tomorrow, the Superman sequel that's due in 2027.

Plus, the DC Universe feels kind of low-rent too, littered with scuzzy creatures and a space menagerie of life forms that feel like they never really get much screentime in these kinds of films. Along with production designs that deliver the lower end of ships and day-to-day life that feel like they're from Mad Max, Supergirl widens the universe by not wearing rose-tinted glasses. And it's all the better for it.

However, not all of this works.

Chiefly, it's an issue of tone throughout. Moments of jokiness clash up against the more sombre themes of rage and vengeance, and it doesn't always work. 

Momoa's Lobo (a kind of beefcake vampire cross with the lead singer of KISS) just feels completely out of place in proceedings, a kind of hammy, OTT character that really adds little to the proceedings and shows up just because he can. 

And disappointingly, Eve Ridley's Ruthye, who's supposed to be the moral conflict of the story as she wrestles with the desire for revenge, just seems to be prone to be repeating her mantra in a Princess Bride Inigo Montoya way that soon loses its heft. Plus, saddled with quite a bit of forced bonding exposition to Supergirl, she feels more like a mouthpiece in this than a fully fledged individual. (An odd subplot about child trafficking also just hangs there for no real depth.)

Consequently, Supergirl feels like it lacks some of the emotional resonance it needs in an at times uneven movie that never quite allows its deep themes to rise to the top and trust its audience with them.

As a result, it's not quite as Super as it could be, but deserves to be applauded for trying something different and for Alcock's superlative performance.

Shaun the Sheep: The Beast of Mossy Bottom: Film Review

Shaun the Sheep: The Beast of Mossy Bottom: Movie Review

Whether it's paying homage to countless horror films or dissing the Wombles, the latest Shaun the Sheep movie is a delight that ewe'll struggle not to laugh at.

The third outing for the loveable sheep on the big screen sees the woolly gang taking on Halloween after the last film Farmageddon saw aliens come to Mossy Bottom.

This time though, when an accident destroys the secret vegetable patch Shaun's been cultivating for the Halloween season, he turns to science to get Tiny the pumpkin he wants. But when he creates a grow-fast formula for the veg, he stores it in a bottle marked Hair Growth, which is inadvertently used by the Farmer, who's smitten with the local vet (Nina Sosanya).

Mistakenly using it, the Farmer transforms into a Bigfoot-like creature, terrifying the locals and also Shaun who realises he has to correct his mistake before it's too late.

There's no denying the inventiveness of Aardman Animations in this clever, family friendly escapade that packs in more in its 80 minutes than some films manage in nearly 2 hours.

It helps that no visual sight gag is off-limits. Whether it's apeing the Simpsons' most famous meme, paying homage to Frankenstein or The 40 Year Old Virgin, or making casual observations about cats or seeing Bitzer take out his own faeces in a plastic bag from his doghouse, via Thriller gags, a throwaway Psycho moment that substitutes strings for floss, every ounce of visual flair is poured onto the screen for maximum effect.

The end result is that Shaun the Sheep continues to carry the mantle which Aardman's been flying for some 50 years now and while he may be cruelly sidelined by Wallace and Gromit, the truth is that Shaun has one hoof squarely planted in humour throughout.

The British sense of humour is firmly on the silly side here, but there's a tender love story between the Farmer and the vet that's universal and the bond between dog and owner is one played for heart too.

Cleverly distinctive, uniquely crafted and lovingly played out, Shaun the Sheep: The Beast of Mossy Bottom is perfect family fare and a sign that the inventive chaps at Aardman still have plenty of life left in them.

A bite-sized version of the Forza Horizon series it may well be, but Hot Wheels Infinite Rush's commitment to solid gaming mechanics and fun arcade racing make this colourful game a blast to play in small doses.

This latest places you in a world of Hot Wheels, islands that offer fun and racing alternatives and an open world mechanic that'll see you go from place to place, blasting around, carrying out odd missions here and there and racing to your heart's content.

Across Wheelswood, Tentacle Bay, Gearville, and Drifty Temples, the four islands of the game, there's plenty to do and also a lot to just simply pick up and play, if that's what you so desire. As a result, the game taps into the kind of fun you'd have with Hot Wheels if you were simply just going to hoon around a track for a while with some friends with their die-cast toys.

Essentially a theme park approach, the game brings a level of fun that only the grouchiest of people could deny and lets those who have played other arcade racers appreciate what's special about Hot Wheels itself. 

With some simple mechanics and around 150 cars to unlock, the game isn't really interested in presenting barriers to play, instead preferring to make it easy to simply pick up the controller and start racing. In terms of the PlayStation tech, the adaptive triggers work incredibly well as brake and accelerate pedals, with force feeling really like it's something to master as you race about.

Another nifty trick is the ability to switch cars during your pursuits by simply holding down a D-pad and selecting another option - it's quite the fun device to keep you on your toes throughout.

In terms of design and simplicity, Hot Wheels Infinite Rush has gone for an overtly colourful palette which works well for its race car world. From the orange ramps to various collectibles scattered throughout, everything's presented nicely and is visually appealing, even if some of the gameplay elements occasionally feel repetitive.

From boost pads to challenges throughout the game and the different islands, there's more than enough to do in Hot Wheels Infinite Rush - and the gotta collect em all mentality will definitely appeal to anyone who's ever picked up a pack of these cars and then spent years searching for rare models in supermarkets and toy stores.

Ultimately, this is a faithful and fun Hot Wheels game - it's one that knows what it wants to deliver and does so with ease - for bitesize, chaotic fun, it's simply unbeatable.

Fallout 76: The Slasher Now Available

The shadow of a mysterious killer, inspired by a Fallout legend, spreads across the Wasteland. The Slasher brings a season-long trail of clues, unsettling encounters, new enemies, and deadly rewards for those brave enough to investigate. 

The Slasher

A mysterious figure masquerading as the infamous Pint-Sized Slasher has begun terrorising Appalachia. As reports of disappearances spread across the region, Vault Dwellers must follow clues, investigate grisly discoveries, and survive encounters with the Slasher's growing army of devoted followers.

Over the course of the event, from today through December 1, new activities and challenges will unlock across the map, building an ongoing narrative that rewards players for returning each week. From scavenger hunts and unmarked graves to Daily Ops, Infestations, Mischief Night celebrations and more, every step brings players closer to uncovering the truth behind the legend. 

Follow His Clues

As players explore Appalachia, they'll collect mysterious evidence tied to the imposter Slasher's killings. These form the foundation of a larger mystery, which will eventually lead to a cinematic showdown.  

Along the way, players will encounter eerie new enemies including the devoted followers of the Pint-Sized Slasher, the Pint-Sized Phantoms and fanatics, all while earning themed rewards, including new power armour and skins. Will Appalachia uncover the truth behind the legend, or become the Slasher’s next victim? 

Why now?

With The Slasher, Fallout 76 reaches its 70th free update, continuing years of ongoing support and new content for the ever-evolving Wasteland. It also marks a new approach for the game, connecting activities across Appalachia into a single evolving experience. This new, limited time event system can be implemented in future planned updates. 

Described by Creative Director Jon Rush as " a first of its kind update for Fallout 76 - a frightening experience that unravels over the weeks spanning our Fall updates", The Slasher transforms the Wasteland itself into part of the story, with new developments unfolding throughout the season. 

"We've long harboured a dark fascination with the various serial killers of Fallout lore, and no name looms as large as The Pint-Sized Slasher. The idea of bringing his namesake into the current Fallout 76 timeline, reimagined through the lens of a manipulative fanatic and his band of merry murderers, was too good to pass up.  Especially when coupled with the Fall season! In tandem with this update, Fallout 76 has been optimised for Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5. On all platforms, players can now experience Fallout 76 at 1440p and 60fps, delivering a smoother, next-generation experience for The Slasher and all future updates. Owners of Fallout 76 on Xbox One or PlayStation 4 can upgrade for free. Bethesda Game Studios will continue to support previous gen consoles with additional visual improvements and stability.

The Terminal List season 2 trailer arrives

The trailer for the second season of Prime Video's The Terminal List starring Chris Pratt has just been released.

The action-packed series based on the best-selling novels by Jack Carr and executive produced by Chris Pratt and Antoine Fuqua alongside showrunner David DiGilio will premiere all eight episodes on Wednesday, October 21, 2026.

To stay close to him, she disguises herself as a man and infiltrates his security team. But when her true identity is revealed, both are forced to face their fears of betrayal, of vulnerability, and of love itself.

Red Queen (October 2)

In the second season of Red Queen based on the book Black Wolf, Antonia Scott — our Red Queen and the smartest person on the planet — and, Jon Gutiérrez — her sidekick, a hot-tempered gay police officer — must solve a crime related to the Russian mafia on the Costa del Sol, following the suspicious disappearance of Lola, the wife of a mobster living in constant flight. Lola is also being pursued by Black Wolf, a hitwoman who will put Antonia's intelligence to the test. Antonia and Jon will find themselves in the middle of a web of corruption and conspiracy that extends far beyond what they could have imagined, while their relationship hangs by a thread due to a chain of secrets and mistrust. At the same time, Mentor follows the trail of suspicious deaths of other Red Queens across Europe, a situation that could endanger the lives of our two protagonists. The I.M.P. employs Moxxie (a by-the-books marksman), Millie (a fiery and skilled assassin), and Loona (their snarky, hellhound receptionist). Alongside his ragtag crew, Blitzo takes on contracts to kill targets in the human world. Balancing work with their personal lives, the team constantly finds themselves in absurd, violent, and darkly comedic situations.

Season Three of Helluva Boss follows Blitzo and the I.M.P. crew as they continue taking jobs across Earth and Hell, while navigating their increasingly complex personal lives. While Blitzo and Stolas struggle to find out where they stand, Millie and Moxxie prepare for a life-changing surprise, and Loona takes on a larger role at I.M.P. Along the way, the team is thrown into a string of increasingly chaotic adventures that test both their skills as assassins and their relationships with one another. Scrubs Season 2 (October 1)

The hilarious and heartfelt second season of “Scrubs”, premiering Thursday, October 1 with two new episodes on Disney+ in New Zealand and a new episode weekly.

J.D., Turk and Elliot have leveled up from interns to icons at Sacred Heart. Now, the respected doctors inspire the next generation while balancing the ups and downs of working in a hospital. Together with characters new and old, they are navigating this next chapter with laughter, heart and some surprises along the way.

The 30-minute revival comedy series stars Zach Braff as "John “J.D.” Dorian," Donald Faison as "Christopher Turk," Sarah Chalke as "Elliot Reid" and Ava Bunn as "Sam Tosh."

Bill Lawrence of Doozer Productions created the original series and serves as executive producer alongside Jeff Ingold and Liza Katzer also of Doozer Productions. Zach Braff, Donald Faison and Sarah Chalke star and executive produce. Aseem Batra serves as executive producer and showrunner; Mike Royce, Mathew Harawitz, Randall Keenan Winston and Michael Spiller also executive produce. The series is produced by 20th Television, a part of Disney Television Studios. Season one of the revival is now streaming on Disney+ in New Zealand.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare | A Narrative Recap

The latest Call of Duty blog takes players through the Campaign narrative from Modern Warfare (2019) through Modern Warfare III, tracing Task Force 141's origins, General Shepherd's betrayal and downfall, and Makarov's rise as the series' central threat.

It sets the stage for John Price now operating off the grid as North Korea launches a full-scale invasion of South Korea, kicking off Modern Warfare 4's story.

Resident Evil: Movie Review

If you think of the cinematic versions of Resident Evil, the chances are you'll be consumed with thoughts of Milla Jovovich pirouetting her way through balletic moves to tackle zombies and overgrown creatures, all under the watchful eye of director Paul W S Anderson.

However, the 2026 version of Resident Evil, the Capcom game franchise which has spawned several versions of uncomfortable horror games, is from Zach Cregger, the man who created the unsettling and unnerving atmospherics of Weapons.

It focuses on medical courier Bryan (Abrams) who's just been told his girlfriend Michelle has discovered they're pregnant. Faced with a conversation he doesn't want to have, Bryan takes one last night job after he's given a parcel to deliver to a hospital in Raccoon City. However, when as he ventures further into a snowy wasteland, his luck begins to run out as error after error pushes him deeper into the world ravaged by an outbreak.

What's evident about the 2026 version of Resident Evil is just how funny it is, how reverent it is to the structure of a video game and how it uses those tropes to (largely) fashion something that has both suspense, a degree of intelligence and makes the most of the ineptitude of its lead.

While the film is still confined to the idea of video game levels (deliver the medical parcel, escape the creature attack in the barn, get through a tunnel which is blocked by a bus, go into the sewer tunnel and various iterations of The Raid in a hospital), Cregger manages to inject a DNA that gels throughout the piece, thanks largely to his lead Austin Abrams.

With elements of what any normal person would do in this situation to a an apparently good guy too inept to do anything but fail when trying to do the right thing, Abrams makes his Bryan a character that you care about and identify with as it all begins to go wrong. 

There's a solid vein of dark humour here as well that's a clever distraction from the suspense and tension and once again plays to the strength of timing and reaction throughout.

And Cregger's done a great job of adapting the source material too. Whether it's having the hero scrabbling around trying to find bullets for the gun in drawers, cabinets and even a fridge, a subtle nod to Resident Evil: Village or creating a shot that follows the action down the barrel of a shotgun to the Raccoon City ambience and a riff on Resident Evil 3's opening it's a solid interpretation of the game's appeal without alienating a non-familiar audience.

One sequence inside Raccoon City as Bryan walks the snow-filled streets and creatures come hurtling down from the skies is visually stunning, and utterly horrific as they explode all around him on landing. It's incredible stuff.

But it's not all perfect.

Paul Walter Hauser is largely wasted as a guy who just shows up to provide some exposition and background to what's going on (albeit infused with some humour at his part in proceedings) and True Detective Night Country's Kali Reis is sidelined with an inexplicably bad entrance and exit that makes little sense.

Resident Evil comes in at around 90 minutes and it's just the right pace to sustain what's going on and unfolding before the body horror and contorted limbs teeters on the wrong side of the ledger.

Overall, 2026's Resident Evil is a blast, a clever mix of Cregger's occasional penchant for the off-kilter, an engaging lead in Abrams and a deep reverence for the world it's mining from.

Black Sheeps first-look trailer

Iconic New Zealand horror Black Sheep has just released its first trailer and revealed details of its highly anticipated premiere abroad.

The sequel to Jonathan King's iconic 2006 black comedy horror will be released in New Zealand in October, getting its premiere first in King's hometown of Wellington before playing a few days later in Auckland at the Terror-Fi Film Festival.

Twenty years after New Zealand’s sheep turned killer in the acclaimed cult comedy-horror Black Sheep, director Jonathan King is back with Black Sheeps - an even bloodier, funnier sequel bringing some familiar faces and a fresh flock of horrors to the screen.

The trailer for Black Sheeps dropped today, with the killer flock ready to make a meal of New Zealand audiences in cinemas from November 12, following a New Zealand premiere at the Terror-Fi Film Festival in Wellington on October 24 and Auckland on October 28. 

Set in and around the first film’s farm and its neighbouring town, Black Sheeps follows a young scientist investigating a dangerous new pathogen tied to the events of the original. The sequel brings together a fresh ensemble of New Zealand talent including newcomer Tabatha Kilick (Dark Sands), Joe Witkowski (Sweet Tooth, Shadow in the Cloud), alongside some familiar faces from the first film, including Nathan Meister (What We Do in the Shadows) reprising his role as Henry Oldfield, and Oliver Driver (Shortland Street) returning as Grant.

Released in 2006, Black Sheep earned $US5m at the global box office and became a cult favourite with its uniquely New Zealand take on the creature-feature genre, turning one of the country's most recognisable animals into a bloodthirsty horror icon. Two decades later, Black Sheeps introduces a new generation of characters - and a new flock with an appetite for carnage. 

Director Jonathan King returns to everything audiences loved about the original - killer sheep, creature effects, gore and that distinctly Kiwi strain of dark, splattery humour.

“It’s great to be back where it all began,” says King. “We made the original Black Sheep in Wellington 20 years ago, so bringing Black Sheeps back here feels like a fitting way to mark the occasion. A lot has changed since then, although there’s still plenty of mileage left in making sheep terrifying – and funny.”

The filmmakers have also reunited with the world-renowned, multi-award-winning effects company Wētā Workshop, which provided the iconic creature effects in the first film, for a new generation of practical creature FX. “This has been a thrilling collaboration with Wētā Workshop,” says King, “my third time working with them, and they’re the best in the world at state-of-the-art, practical FX. We’ve had the opportunity to refine the design of things like our Weresheep - with technology that wasn’t available 20 years ago - and to see how another key creature from the first film has aged over the intervening decades.”

The sequel will have its international premiere at the prestigious 2026 Sitges Film Festival in Spain, the world’s leading genre film festival.

Black Sheeps is directed by Jonathan King and written by King, Matthew Grainger and Rosie Howells. King and Grainger produce alongside Terror-Fi’s James Partridge, with Philippa Campbell, Richard Fletcher, Matthew Bradley, Ron Bradley, Samantha Braun, and Umbrella’s Jasmin McSweeney and Ari Harrison serving as executive producers.

The film was made with support from the New Zealand Film Commission. Umbrella is distributing Black Sheeps in New Zealand and Australia, with WTFilms handling international sales.

Black Sheeps will release nationwide from November 12.

The Weight: Movie Review

A Depression-era film with a bit of directorial flair and clout and an actor who's getting better with age, Padraic McKinley's tale of a man separated from his daughter has all the heft its title promises.

Hawke is Samuel Murphy, a former soldier turned mechanic who has a knack of getting things done. However, as it's 1933 and America's suffering, those skills land him and his daughter nowhere as he's forced out onto the street with his child. Things get worse when he ends up in jail after a street brawl.

Sentenced to a labour camp and with only a desire to do his time to get back to his daughter, Murphy is offered an out by camp boss Warden Clancy (Crowe, mainly bookending the movie). The only catch is he and a group of men have to transfer gold across the wilderness before President Roosevelt snatches it from the mines.

Tasked with the perilous journey and the wilderness, as well as the untrustworthiness of his colleagues, Murphy finds his route to would-be freedom is anything but simple.

There's a veritable grit to The Weight, which is carried largely by one of Hawke's best performances. A knotty role delivered by a sinewy and taut lead, the film wastes none of its time getting down to the plot - even if it could do with losing maybe a little of its 2-hour runtime.

An action-adventure survival thriller that offers up at least one moment of directorial flair (within a storm sequence), McKinley's story does little to tug at the heartstrings, but plays all the classic trappings of a film built on twists and the violence that men do in desperate times.

But wisely, he never loses the heart of his lead Murphy, a man who's caught between reality and the promise of something he desperately wants. It helps that Hawke never overplays his hand and is restrained in extremis, but offers the kind of compelling performance you'd want from a film that feels like it's come from yesteryear.

Whether it's the villainous terrain or the actual villains of the piece, The Weight manages to make the most out of both its setting and its leads, crafting levels of suspense that are hard to resist. There's a grittiness to the drive on display here and the film goes to lengths to ensure that the rawness felt by all feels as real as the lines etched on Hawke's face.
