The beautiful game returns once again.

EA Sports FC27: PS5 Review

In its latest annual update, EA Sports has added some major gameplay content to the long-running franchise and still ensured that the football remains at the heart of what transpires.

The biggest push of the 2027 season is the inclusion of The Grounds, a new social football playground where fans can live out their street to stadium football fantasy.

Back once again is Career Mode. The latest version includes a rebuilt Transfer Market, introducing active club bidding and realistic player values enhanced by TransferRoom. Master new negotiation tactics, including performance and buy-back clauses, as Dynamic OVRs reflect player form, morale, and fitness across every club.

Yet at the end of the day what matters most is the gameplay - and it has to be said that the latest EA Sports FC game tweaks a little here and there, but doesn't tinker too much with what's worked well before.

Perhaps the most noticeable change is that the defence has improved, ensuring that manual games now feel like they can be won or lost the closer the opponents get to the goal. It's noticeable that tackling's a little beefier and the referee tactics are a little more discernible throughout.

There's a fluidity to the gameplay too, which makes EA's latest feel a lot like the complete package. Games flow, passing is a little more intuitive now you can decide who you want to pass to rather than just pressing a button and hoping. It all adds up to a more integral experience for fans of the game - and also is strong enough to entice newcomers into the fold too.

The biggest change though has been The Grounds, the social hub that takes a bit of time to get used to, but offers rewards when it does so. The open-world environment may not appeal to everyone and there's a degree of following what 2K has done before in terms of opening it up to all, but for those looking to do something a little more than kick a ball around, the opportunity is there.

Career Mode is still rewarding too, but this time more plausible transfer markets and opportunities present themselves throughout, meaning the game's often felt like it could reward the hours of time you'll sink into building up a team and boosting their standing.

Perhaps the one downside is that some of the in-game animations look a little poorer compared to usual. Crowd NPCs sometimes merge into an amorphous blob and while it's a minor thing, it's moments like this which take you out of the game.

All in all though, EA Sports FC27 offers enough enjoyment for anyone wondering about whether to part with their cash for this annual outing - it's definitely no own goal and EA's clearly got its eye on the prize as it continues to match the annual release date window.
