SUPER PUMPED: THE BATTLE FOR UBER AVAILABLE FROM FEBRUARY 28

Raised by Refugees

It's the new millennium in Auckland City, and Pax Assadi is your typical 12-year-old who's obsessed with hip hop, basketball, girls, and Eddie Murphy. His parents came to NZ in the late '80s as refugees and all they want him to do is study hard and eventually become a doctor. All Pax wants to do is fit in and feel accepted, but with 9/11 a very fresh memory, that's easier said than done for a part-Pakistani part Iranian kid. Navigating his parents' expectations, finding friends, being a good sibling to his six-years younger brother, and trying to figure out what his identity is in NZ is hard enough - then add on the fact that he is also being ravaged by puberty. Pax quickly discovers that being funny is the easiest way to be liked. But when he prioritises being funny over everything else, those that are closest to him could end up as collateral damage.
