Astro A50 Wireless Headset: Review
When it comes to gaming headsets, the market is positively awash with gear for the gamers.
From wireless headsets to earbuds, it's not exactly a market that's lacking, so the race is really on to ensure that any headset can stand out in the marketplace.
One of the more expensive sets, Logitech's Astro A50 headsets already came out earlier this year with a A50X version that offered quality but was on the higher end of the price point, meaning some weren't really keen to adapt the sets.
So with an eye on the Christmas and Black Friday market, Logitech's re-released its A50s at a lower price point, and included some extra features on the set to entice potential users. Incorporating Playsync, the set still does what the A50X did very well - it delivers on sound, instant wireless connectivity and offers a kind of audio depth that's likely to impress the higher end users.
But for casual users as well, the headset delivers on both comfort and ease of use.
While the base unit still represents a somewhat hulking block of plastic that, like the headphones themselves, is solidly built, but still feels like it's lacking a touch of prestige for the price point.
Yet with a solid battery life and an expectation of doing what's expected, the Astro A50 Wireless Headset does much to earn its stripes. Whether it's the use of Logitech's G Hub to finetune your own audio needs and desires or the comfort they offer with velour pads for hours of play, they more than hold their own in the marketplace.
But it's still a frustration that the base unit has to be wired into consoles to allow you to switch between units. Not all of the gaming units are kept together in a household and the need to keep it all cabled up limits some of what the Astro A50s can do.
However, when it comes to use with a PC or just one console itself, the headset comes into its own and offers exactly what a gamer needs. While they're still pretty pricey in the marketplace overall, it's hard to go past not recommending these headsets to players - with an ability to tweak where needed and offer a tailor-made experience for users, they show that Logitech's desire to keep its core audience satiated isn't something that should be overlooked.
