Mosley: DVD Review

Mosley: DVD Review

Two decades in the making, and with a more intriguing approach to animated fare, Kirby Atkins' Chinese / New Zealand co-pro is certainly the kind of film that deserves praise rather than scorn - even if the tone is a bit all over the place.
Mosley: Film Review

Atkins voices Mosley, a Thoriphant (a sort of cross between dinosaur elephant and plasticine) creature that's known only life under the yolk, working on a farm. Mosley's heard of the Uprights, a race of early Thoriphants that walked upright and had hands, and never knew life under the oppression of man.

One day, forced to the edge, and with his family under threat of separation, Mosley finds himself spurred into action and on a quest to discover his race's past and their future...

Mosley has an intriguing story, a mix of mystical and mythical, that borrows from the likes of Kubo and The Two Strings, and which shows ambition in telling a different story than you normally get in animation these days.

Initially, the film's computer animation doesn't stand out because of the muted palette, and a fractured tone that jumps about, but look past these initial faults, and stick with the film because the elements click together and begin to soar.

While some of the younger end of the audience may fidget a little, and while some of the emotional edges seem a little muted like the colours, Mosley offers a tantalisingly different story that rewards as time goes on.

Mosley: Film Review

Coupled with a soaring orchestral score, Mosley's animation and mythology gel together nicely in the final furlong to provide something that offers a resonance that's missing early on.

That doesn't mean it's all perfect sailing to get there, but Mosley's pleasures outweigh its occasional pain point to offer a slice of New Zealand family fare that shows promise in difference and a future in the New Zealand animation industry.

My Spy: DVD Review

My Spy: DVD Review

My Spy knows what it wants to do and it has no pretense otherwise.

Bautista is JJ, a former Special Forces op who now works in the CIA - but whose hopeless ineptitude blows their biggest operation which centres around a potential nuclear threat.

Assigned to watch a family believed to be connected to the terrorists, JJ, along with new tech support buddy Bobbi (Conchords' star Schaal, who gets some of the best oneliners and moments) believes he's been benched.

My Spy: Film Review

But when the 9 year old girl Sophie (Coleman, amiable without ever being too precocious)twigs they're operatives, she deploys blackmail to help her settle into her new school and life...

Sure, there's a story we've all seen here before - the mismatched adult out of their emotional depth, and the kid who's looking for a surrogate dad. But My Spy doesn't pretend to radically change the formula, only play up to it, and occasionally, openly mocking it.

Bautista uses some of the same skills as Drax from Guardians of the Galaxy and Stuber to reasonable comedic effect, but in among the pratfalls, and silliness of the wafer-thin story lies a fairly solid piece of family fare that offers a few unexpected laughs, a subtle Indiana Jones gag and a faltering slide into inevitable sentiment (but never mush).

Bautista and Schaal have elements of the Melissa McCarthy comedy flick Spy, but it's Coleman and Bautista's charming double act that may catch you off guard, even if none of it feels utterly original.

It may dip a little unevenly and lean a little heavily into its terrorism plot to power things forward, but charm gets My Spy a long way, and it never outstays its welcome.

All players start out carrying a package -- the goal is to deliver said package to your enemy's camp without getting killed. Whichever team delivers the most or all of their packages by the end of the game will destroy the enemy base for good.
