Dr Who and The Claws of Axos: Special Edition: DVD Review

Dr Who and The Claws of Axos: Special Edition: DVD Review

Rating: PG
Released by Roadshow and BBC

So, with the end of the releases to the classic range nearing, it's time for some of the earlier releases to get the special treatment.

We've already had Dr Who Vengeance on Varos: Special Edition this year, and now it's the turn of this tale from Jon Pertwee's 1971 reign as the third Doctor.

When a group of beautiful gold covered Axon aliens land in a damaged spaceship offering the Earth the secret to ultimate power, it all seems to be too good to be true. And when the Doctor's nemesis, The Master, appears, it clearly is...

Dr Who and The Claws of Axos: Special Edition isn't a bad release at all.

It's more for the extras that this set's been given a release anyway as the original disc was somewhat lacking. This latest batch is a relatively impressive bunch as well. Two new docos anchor Dr Who and The Claws of Axos: Special Edition: a look back at the making of and a Living with Levene piece, which is brilliantly presented by comedian Toby Hadoke. Toby spends a weekend with Sergeant Benton aka John Levene to get to the bottom of who the eccentric actor is - it's quite a sweet piece and features some great moments from Toby asking us to imagine he's just told his 11 year old self that he's had breakfast cooked by Sgt Benton...

All in all, Dr Who and The Claws of Axos: Special Edition doesn't feel like a rushed release. It could do with a few more extras to give it the mantle of Special Edition but fans will buy it regardless. Others, probably not so much.
