Assassin's Creed: Valhalla: Dawn of Ragnarok DLC: PS4 Review

Assassin's Creed: Valhalla: Dawn of Ragnarok DLC: PS4 Review

Platform: PS4

Dubbed as one of the most ambitious expansions in a franchise's history, Assassin's Creed: Valhalla: Dawn of Ragnarok's DLC takes you away from the world of men and into the world of gods.

Delving into Norse mythology further, and taking you into the world of Odin, Assassin's Creed: Valhalla: Dawn of Ragnarok sees you doing much the same stuff as you'd been doing prior in the base game.

This time though, with a chunky storyline and side quests as you'd come to expect of an Ubisoft title,  you get to play as Odin, as he races to save his son Baldr from the clutches of fire giants out to end his life and ruin yours.

The game sees you forced to head the land of the dwarves, Svartalfheim, and forge uneasy alliances to try and help you achieve your aim - but it's very much of the same ilk as to what's been played in Assassin's Creed: Valhalla.

That's not to say that it's not eminently playable or enjoyable enough, just that for a third expansion, it would be hoped that the developers may throw a bit of caution to the wind and try to add something new for the game.

Perhaps the fact that you're more immersed in the Norse mythology and the world that Valhalla has created is somewhat of enough for fans of the genre, but unless you're already invested in the main game, and despite how well-executed it is, Assassin's Creed: Valhalla: Dawn of Ragnarok is still a difficult sell for anyone not willing to dabble back in Ubisoft's long-running franchise.

Graphically, the game's open world is enticing enough, and the addition of fire brandishing villains and fantastical elements gives Assassin's Creed: Valhalla: Dawn of Ragnarok a sense of purpose and place.

Ultimately, Assassin's Creed: Valhalla: Dawn of Ragnarok is the kind of DLC that will be best suited to fans already immersed in the world - it does send worrying signals that Ubisoft doesn't really have any plans to branch out and try something new, but it does offer a solid enough potential send-off for the Valhalla base game.
