Sonic Origins Plus: PS5 Review

The little blue blur is back in a fairly comprehensive bundle that digitally remasters the Origins games for the next generation.

What's most noticeable about this collection is just how incredibly game-changing Sonic was in terms of gameplay, reaction times and also speed. But what's also obvious is just how difficult it remains after his 1991 debut.

Pulling together the 12 Game Gear titles, and Amy Rose as a playable character in four of them shows SEGA have concentrated on trying to provide the ultimate gaming experience for fans. Emulations they may be (the full list of titles is below), but for the most part Sonic Origins Plus remains a testatment to why the games themselves remain such favourites.

Whilst there is particularly an argument to not buy this outing if you already own Sonic Origins, the remastered approach will prove particularly enticing to newcomers of this particular gaming genre, but it may feel at times dated for those more satiated on current iterations of Sonic.

With a museum housing Sonic artifacts, and a chance to play the games without fear of death in Missions, concept artwork and other minor touches, there is a feeling that this has tried to be the definitive package for Sonic.

But even though it's 16-bit, 8-bit heaven for those looking for a retro fix, it's hard to feel Sonic Origins Plus has years of longevity - and at the entry price for it, that cost may be a little steep for anyone - even those who've feasted on Sonic for years.

The Game Gear titles which are emulated and playable in the museum include:

  • Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine
  • Sonic Blast
  • Sonic Chaos
  • Sonic Drift
  • Sonic Drift 2
  • Sonic Labyrinth
  • Sonic Spinball
  • Sonic the Hedgehog (8-bit)
  • Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (8-bit)
  • Sonic Triple Trouble
  • Tails Adventure
  • Tails' Skypatrol
