The point and click procedural is as old a gaming conceit as ever there was.

But Road 96 is simply about trying to take that mechanic and turn it into something different - and it's successful if not quite bold enough to fully stand out.

Set in the fictional world of Petria, the title is essentially an escape room game (on a larger scale) that sees you pitted against the authorities of a faceless world and dictatorship. You can choose either to influence a local election in Petria - or basically make a run for it.

There may be a set story within here, but it's the characters within that make Road 96 a game that's worth playing. From differing interactions based on every choice you make, Road 96 is determined to ensure that each option is worth playing out and also thinking properly about.

Dialogues and mini games make up the most of Road 96's indie feel - and while they may seem piecemeal to reviews like this, the insight they provide in the game makes every choice and result feel palpable.

There's an occasional feel of repetition here, but ultimately, Road 96 is worth travelling on and appreciating for trying to do something different in the gaming space.
